104 "It is primarily through formal education that a culture tries to perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears."
一种文化要想保留它认为好的思想,消除它认为不好的思想,主要是通过正规的教育。

There is a growing public concern over the function and effectiveness of education. The speaker in the title statement advocates that to perpetuate favorable ideas and discredit adverse ones in today’s society, education is the primarily method. I partly agree with the speaker’s assertion, while I insist that there are many other methods which are equally important to achieve that goal.
First of all, I must admitted that formal education is a traditional method for a society to perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears which has been proved useful in the process of the social development. Formal education not only provides academic knowledge, but also gives information on moral and law which help students to set right outlook on life. For example, from the science class, students will learn the law of conservation of energy and hence understand that the perpetual motion machine is just a beautiful dream. Apart from science, from formal education, students also acknowledge that being honest, diligent and courtesy are right, while lying, laziness and rudeness are wrong. Apparently, the traditional ways of formal education successfully help the future generation of the society to form a clear figure of what it favors and what it fears.
Although I agree that formal education help to perpetuate the ideas the society favors and discredit the ideas it fears, I insist there are growing problems arising from the formal education system. In the first place, without practicing, it is meaningless for the young people to possess such ideal set of value the society prefer. In second place, young people today are more independent than their ancestors. They have their own opinion on what is right or wrong, and they would like to act according to their own judgment rather than what they have learned in school. The most common example is drinking alcohol. Obviously it is an illegal behavior which is used by most youngsters to prove their maturity. Therefore, when it comes to the youth who are more eager to taste the things not favored by the society in order to deciding themselves, the traditional formal education seems useless.
Furthermore, as the world develops increasingly rapid, there have existed many other methods to perpetuate the society’s favorable ideas and discredit the opposite ones. The new channels such as internet, TVs can also help to achieve the goal of maintain formal standards. While these channels provide the young people with more chances to touch about the outside world, they also help the society to promulgate their favorable criteria of right and wrong. Besides medium, informal education, related regulations and laws can also help the society to perpetuate its favorable ideas.
From what has been discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that formal education is still an effective way to perpetuate social conventions, while we cannot overlook other equally important channels as medium and social regulations in preserving social favorable ideas. |
