Argument 7
The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.
"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."
提纲:
1、
The author asserts that residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, a member of the Good Earth Coalition instead of Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council in the next mayoral election due to the worse situation in Clearview during the past year, and the author is fully convinced that the current members are not protecting our environment. Convincing as the reasoning seems at the first glance, further reflection reveals that the conclusion is predicated on some dubious assumptions and biased evidences.
First of all, the author seems to fail to show detailed evidence on the passive impacts made by Frank Braun and attribute the fast rapidly in number of factories (语病)directly to air pollution. It is possible that Frank Braun has lay stress on these problems and found some measures to deal with the worse environment, which may able to be ignored by town council. It is also likely that, although the town council has made great efforts to overcome these troubles, there is so little the result that can be ignored by most people. Meanwhile, it is the possibility that building of factories have no unfavorable impacts on the environment.
Moreover, the author tends to fail to take into account some other factors leading to the result those 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses at the local hospital. On the one hand, due to the recent days of cold weather, the majority of people are more likely to catch a cold, and such severe cold infects so quickly that people in growing numbers are willing to see the doctor. On the other hand, Clearview may be a city that many people suffer from rhinitis problems, when winter comes, those people who have rhinitis problems have raised the popularity in hospital sharply.(这个论据有一点牵强,argument提出的是一年的对比,这些有病的以前也会有病,我觉得提一下去年全镇总人口基数增加可能会好一点)
In addition, the author hold a threshold point that elect Ann Green means these problems are able to be solved. There is little information we known about Ann Green, a member of the Good Earth Coalition. Therefore, for instance, there would be certain other problems after we have elected Ann Green, maybe the environmental problems are willing to undergo a decline, otherwise, those serious problems are still to be solved.
To reiterate, the argument of the author is not convincing as it stands. To make this argument logically more acceptable, the author have to show more detailed information on the reason why Ann Green would be able to improve the environmental problems, and negative aspects from those factories, Frank Braun and town council, and even the number of respiratory illness actuarially due to air pollution.
逻辑错误找的很准确,语言也比较好。
我觉得最后一段结尾挺好的,提出了改进,这一点在intro里专门提过。
