TOPIC: ARGUMENT179 - The following is amemorandum written by the director of personnel to the president of the CedarCorporation.

"It would be a mistake to rehire theGood-Taste Company to supply the food in our employee cafeteria next year. Itis the second most expensive caterer in the city. In addition, its prices haverisen in each of the last three years, and it refuses to provide meals forpeople on special diets. Just last month three employees complained to me thatthey no longer eat in the cafeteria because they find the experience'unbearable.' Our company should instead hire Discount Foods. Discount is afamily-owned local company and it offers a varied menu of fish and poultry. Irecently tasted a sample lunch at one of the many companies that Discountserves and it was delicious-an indication that hiring Discount will lead toimproved employee satisfaction."

The director of personnel makes therecommendation that in order to improve employee satisfaction this companyshould sign a contract with Discount Foods instead of the former caterer in thecorporation’s cafeteria, the Good-Taste Company, which based on the price andthe service, the variety of diets and tastes of the two companies. At the firstglance, it might be somehow reasonable, but further consideration reveals thatit contains several logical flaws and is therefore unconvincing as it stands.

First of all, the director’ conclusion thatthe prices of the Good-Taste Company are not worthy depend on the facts that it’sthe second expensive caterer in the city and its prices has risen continuouslyin last three years. However, it is unfair to judge the prices are high or lowwithout considering what the company provides. It's well known that the moreyou pay, the more you get. When saying the Good-Taste Company's prices arehigh, the director must present all the relative evidence that is including inthe prices. Besides, it’s hasty to assume that the Good-Taste Company’s priceswill continue to go up for the reason that it has risen for last 3 years. Thus,the director cannot confidently draw any general conclusions that the food andservice Good-Taste Company provides do not worth the prices.

In addition, the director reports that inlast month there were 3 employees complained about their unbearable experience,which implies the Good-Taste Company is not favored by employees. Withoutevidence that the three employees complained are representative of all theemployees who have meals in cafeteria, it is hasty to draw any conclusionsabout the employees’ satisfaction of the Good-Taste Company. Moreover, thedirector’s conclusion about the quality of food from Discount Foods depends onhis only taste of a sample lunch, which cannot be convincing evidence. Sincedifferent people have different tastes, it’s unfair to evaluate the food ofDiscount Foods with the taste of the director only.

Even assuming that Discount Foods offersdelicious food that will be favored by the entire employees, the directorassumes that delicious food in the corporation’s cafeteria will improveemployee satisfaction. However, the director overlooks other possible factorscorrelated with employee satisfaction such as the working environment orbenefits they can obtain. Perhaps the employees are fond of the food supplied nowso they won’t be happier to have Discount Foods’ meals. Or they might be underthe pressure of their work and have not time to enjoy the delicious foods,which means the taste of the foods in corporation’s cafeteria doesn’t matter tothem and certainly will not improve their satisfaction.

In sum, the recommendation for changing thecafeteria’s caterer is not well supported. To convince me that the proposedchange is a better choice of the cafeteria’s caterer, the director must provideclear evidence that employees are having unbearable experience with theGood-Taste Company and that Discount Foods offers better foods and service. Tobetter evaluate the recommendation, I would need more information about how thechoice of different food supplier would effect the employee satisfaction inCedar Corporation.
