118. "In any field of endeavor--the sciences, the humanities, the social sciences, industry, etc.--it is not the attainment of a goal that matters, but rather the ideas and discoveries that are encountered on the way to the goal."

According to the statement, it is the ideas and discoveries that are encountered during attaining goals rather than the attainment of a goal that matters. In my view, which one does matter depends largely on their dedication to the society. While ideas and discoveries made on the way to the goal may solve specific problems which at first were not endeavored to be, on balance, it is the attaining of goals already decided made our society progress step by step and enlarge our knowledge of the world.

It is true that many great ideas and discoveries are coming out of accidents in some way. The byproducts, or even failures in experiments, can turn out to be perfect solutions solving long-lasting problems or simply become new inventions that facilitate our life. Example from a kind of well-known beverage, namely Coke, serves to illustrate this point. As we all know, the marvelous liquid sells thousands of millions bottles around the world everyday as a popular recreation.  However, the coke was at first invented aiming to be used as medical stuff to cure cold. Of course, this goal of curing cold fails on its way but the inventor of then encountered with the idea of turning coke to beverage and he made it a most successful case. Simply put, it is the idea encountered on the way to invent new medicine that creates a better product, Coke. This kind of illustrations can also be found in other fields of endeavor, which clearly exemplify the significance of ideas and discoveries encountered on the way to attainting a goal.

However, without clearly goals and the endeavor made to attain these goals, only the accidentally encountered ideas and discoveries are far from improving our lives. The sciences, the humanities and industry can not be in such rapid growth if all the scientists and researchers think the attaining of goals do not matter. The progress of these fields must be made step by step, which means each period of time has its own goal to achieve. If the basic goals can not be attained, the further research just simply can not be done. One apt illustration of this point involves the field of physics. In order to discover the basic components of articles, scientists can not wait for the ideas and discoveries made in other fields to help them. Instead, they must make specific research plans to explore how the molecules are organized, then how the atoms are organized, and so on. If we don't care whether these goals can be achieved, our physics could not be as advanced as it is now.  Further, the attainment of a goal give us clear direction to focus our attention to thus we would not lost in the sea of unsolved problems in every fields.  

In the final analysis, we call for a balance between the attainment of a goal and the ideas and discoveries encountered on the way to the goal. Each of them has its own merits to the progress of our society, science, industry and humanities. In other words, our society can not be so advanced if we only care one of them, either goals or the ideas and discoveries made during achieving the goals.
