71.Copper occurs in nature mixed with other minerals and valuable metals in ore, and the proportion of copper in the ore can vary considerably. Until fairly recently, the only way to extract pure copper from ore was by using a process that requires large amounts of electric energy, especially if the proportion of copper in the ore is low. New copper-extracting technologies can use up to 40 percent less electricity than the older method to process the same amount of raw ore, especially when the proportion of copper in the ore is high. Therefore, we can expect the amount of electricity used by the copper-extraction industry to decline significantly.

The author posits that electricity comsuption would decrease significantly due to the deduction that the wide use of new technology would save the power for ore processing. Though ostensibly well-reasoned, he fails to verify the conclusion for reasons as follows. 15.49

First, the author mistakenly confuses the processing of ore with the production of copper. The former involves only the amount of raw material without considering the output, the latter is  directly related to the real efficiency and profits of companies. Possibly, though the new technology can process more ore given same amount of electric enegry, the output of mineral would decrease. Or, for the sake of higher processing rate, the new technology might fail to extract all copper within the ore, giving rise to a quantity of wastes. Either of the possibility, if true, would weaken the author’s assumption that new technology is more energy-efficient. 15.57

Secondly, no comparison between the new technology and the old in the aspect of output of copper is given. Though mentioning that the new method functions especially well for ores with higher copper concentration, we are not informed how much can the traditional procedure produce, and thus the conclusion that new one outpaced the old can hardly be justified. Besides, how about when copper concentration is low? There only drawbacks of the old method is given. Possibly, the new technology would fail to overcome the disadvantages and perform no better than the conventional one. In the two misleading comparison discussed above, the author incautiously rush to conclusion without checking whether neccesary information of the two parts are equally present. 16.08

Thirdly, the assertion about the sharp decline of electricity comsuption is based on two presumption, which have not been substantiated potently. The primary presumption goes that the new technology would gain popularity among a wide range. Yet if, for example, the equipments are exorbitant for companies to afford, or, the operation condition of the machine is limited within  certain ranges such as flat, mild and dry indoor places, which are always not the case in many quary, the employment of the new method would be less than popular. Also, no other cost for operation except the ore processing is given. Perhaps new machines would require more turbines for ventilation, or demand more power-consuming gadget for assistance. Hance it is too hasty to claim that the reduction of power comsuption in processing stage would compansate the possible increase in other aspects. 16.21

To reiterate, the author builds his prediction on ill-founded comparison and presumptions, rendering the conclusion undependable. If he is to buttress the conclusion, specified research on both benefits and drawbacks of the new method, along with its cost as a whole, would be necessary. 16.25
