Issue25

Anyone can make things bigger and more complex. What requires real effort and courage is to move in the opposite direction-in other words, to make things as simple as possible.

In the contemporary times with highly advanced science and technology it seems that anyone can make things bigger or simpler. However, whether one can complicate or simplify things does not only depend on one's talents, attitudes and abilities, but it is also up to the concrete situations. As given fields are various, the results may differ.

Admittedly, compared with the past, modern society provides more resources involved with the complexity and resolutions which one can take advantage of. When facing something seems to be simple, one may think it over and find out numerous relevant matters. For example, the internet supplies us with overload information that one cannot isolate a single one from others. The more related issues are incorporated, the bigger and more complex one matter becomes. Such as the famous Butterfly effect, it is not just as simple as the waver of the butterfly, scientists have found out the more significant influence it involves, that is a much bigger problem , the hurricane. By investigating and researching, one may make a simple thing much complicated.

However, not everyone could complicate anything without considering the attitudes and abilities of one or what the thing is. Whether one is willing to look at the things from multiple angles or in what way one resolves the problems does matter. Like the various lives we lead, some one prefers a diverse one while others may want a simpler. That's the different attitudes towards the same thing. Another factor is the ability, for instance, a common individual may take the water as water, and however, a chemist could analyze the components of water, and concludes the properties and applications of it. Besides, concerning different fields, to complicate or to simplify needs careful choices. Politics tends to establish a much more complex political legislative system to solve any kind of problems. Whereas the well-known psychologist Freud just contributed the essential dynamic of differential psychological phenomenon to the sex. When facing with varied situations, one may make varying determines.

Furthermore, it is a problem to make things more complex, and to simplify is quite another. To make the problem simple, one should first answer the questions that why things should be simplified and whether it is more difficult to do that. As truth is austere, one may have a feeling that the simplest thing is perhaps the most essential one. Like most disciplines of physic, simple as they seem to be, they have taken the most efforts and courage of physicists who work on them, seeking for the very essence of the most complicated problems. In fact, to pursue the essence of things, one must first analyzing the problem with related factors, then simplify the issue by combination of all the crucial sections, and finally one may achieve the goal. In other words, to complicate things and to simplify are not the same process or a reversible one. Therefore, which one needs more efforts and courage relies on the things and what the goal is.

To sum up, different situations determine that it is not a simple problem to justify the complex assertion above. Considering whether anyone can make things complex, one must take the attitudes and ability into account. Estimating which is more important and difficult, to complicate or to simplify and why, one should incorporate the concrete conditions within the problem. Only by doing this can one make a righteous judgment.
