36 The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.

1

According to the statement made by the author “the greatness of individuals can only be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries”, we will be easily draw a conclusion that no one in current society, even those who have made extraordinary contribution to human beings, can match the word “greatness”. Admittedly, quite a number of individuals with great success can not be accepted by their contemporaries, but enjoyed tremendous popularity by those who live after them. However, it is also arbitrary to expand such pessimistic claim to all the situations.

When we look back on the history of human being, it is not difficult to find that the greatness of individuals, especially in the field of natural science, are not accepted and even despised by their contemporaries. William Harvey was an English physician, and he discovered the circulation of blood and the role of heart in propelling it, and thus refuting the theory of Galen, a dominant theories with millions of followers. Due to the fact that the scientific method Harvey conducted was, to some extent, against the ethical law of that time, he subjected to all kinds of suspicions and abuses, even from his colleagues and co-workers. Not until 30 years after the death of the great physician, the theory was reevaluated and considered to be the foundation of modern physiology. In spite of William Harvey, many great scientists, such as Bruno, Copernicus, received severe criticism from the contemporaries, but it is more than compensated for the later widespread recognition of their contribution.

While we are feeling upset about how unjust those great individuals are treated, we also have to realize, there are much more individuals whose achievement are accepted by their contemporaries and enjoy great popularity among them. Bill Gates is one of those people. He set up the Microsoft Company and made extraordinary contribution to the development of software in PC, and therefore accelerated the widespread use of personal computers, bringing human to an era of information. The great success he achieved is commonly respected by almost all the people in the world and that his greatness has been decided just by their contemporaries. Unlike the statement by the speaker, the word “greatness” is still wide used in the contemporary society: Individuals with extraordinary discoveries and inventions, as long as they provide benefit to the society, are all considered of greatness.

Admittedly, the pessimistic statement made by the speaker may be arbitrary, but the concern shown by the speaker makes a lot of sense. The important reason why great discoveries, from times to times, are ignored or severely criticized, results in the fact that our society is not tolerant enough to skepticism. History tells us that great heralds, if not accepted by their contemporaries, are often trying to throw the false but dominant thinking at their times. It is a great tragedy not only for those great individuals but also a tragedy for the whole society. To avoid that, we should try to build a society more open to skepticism, a therefore mature and healthy society.

The statement made by the speaker is not convincing: greatness of individuals can be decided not only by those who live after them, but also their contemporaries. However, the statement is also enlightening, it calls for the tolerant environment of skepticism and a society where greatness can all be accepted by the contemporaries.

楼主的用词也很厉害,比如make a lot of senseenlighteningarbitrarynot convincing,唯一看到admittedly出现了两次,可以替换一下。
看了楼主几篇issue,觉得在文章结构、遣词造句以及逻辑上都没有大问题哦~个别词义的把握还需要仔细注意~
There’s nothing to lose.

这句是不是该 we will easily draw a conclusion that ...
不明白为何用被动式,不过限于我的水平有限,不知道是否你故意这么用的。
