"The surest indicator of a great nation is not the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, but the general welfare of all its people."

I fundamentally agree with the author that it is the numbers’ well-beings rather than the arts and science reflects the greatness of the society. In my opinion, the final criterion to assess a society is the level of its all number’s well-beings. No matter young or old, no matter he is living in Mc mansion or shelter. The arts or science could satisfy the numbers’ desire and demand, but that is just a mirror, far from the yardstick of a great nation.

I strongly believe that, the function of a society is to meet its members’ demanding and desire. Admittedly, usually high level of science and arts sign the greatness of a society. But what we should aware is that, it is the prosperous scientific and arts, and it abounded fruit, or the conduct of boasting these fruits itself, satisfy some demands of the citizens. Firstly, it is obvious that, advanced technology ensure the high quality of life. Imagine the subway make the commute easier, the advanced medical care ensure the life qualities. Secondly, after the need of life safety and quality was met, people ask for beauty. The esthetic demands ask the society to afford arts or other types of design. Imagine the sculptures standing in the city, the prosperous arts market, the town planning and more. They all contribute to satisfy people’s desire for a quality life too. Thirdly, as to the sense of pride and honor, the fruit of science and arts is the reason for people to pride. This demanding was asked especially when two societies are compared.

However, the equality and justice, is more important than the achievement of science or arts in some extent. A nation full of studious prejudice, segregation, and significant difference in income is sure not a great one, or even evil, even it show great advantage in the field of arts and science. The equality and justice ensure the welfares of all people, that is, the fruit of the society could be shared by all the members but not limited to an exclusive group or class. Firstly, Emphasis too much on the achievements of scientists and arts could overlook the contribution from ordinary work. The pyramid, for example, is not built by the pharaoh, but millions of labors. Secondly, it is unfair to limit the social fruits to an exclusive class. That is a sense we all accept. As human beings, individuals are different, in our mental or physical capability, but we share the same essence. The congenital, blood, racial different is illegitimate reasons to treat differently. Thirdly, the equality and justice is a symbol of the advance of a nation, it reflects the social value system, then mirror the greatness in a higher level view. For instance, society paying more mercy to the venerable group is the feature of greatness. because not only the society should have those achievement, but also it have the strong sense of equality and justice.

In sum, the all people’s welfares indicate more than the achievements of science or arts. All people’s well beings reflects but not limited to the prosperous of science and arts, and it also demand for the equality and justice in the society, which is ensure the welfares of all the members, is more important in some extent.

Imagine the sculptures standing in the city, the prosperous arts market, the town planning and more. They all contribute to satisfy people’s desire for a quality life too. The rulers, otherwise, is the society’s rugulater and the social frame’s constructer account for the nation’s safety, domestic policy or the international relations, which have influence on many respects of the citizen’s lives, and meet the citizen’s requires bout self-esteem, . In short, it is the achievement of the rulers, the scientist, and artist produce the material to meet the citizen’s various requirements.

However, to realize the abundant material achievement is not the nation’s function relies on. To assess a nation, the stick yard is how the nation satisfied the citizen’s requirement, and the main body of the nation is the citizen, not only the one lives in the McMasion, but also the one lives in the shelter. The author focus on the achievements of scientists, arts or rulers, but overlook the equality and justice, which is more important in some extent.
