TOPIC: ISSUE13 - "Many of the world's lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. The governments of countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct."

When society is developing, some languages are forgetting in the world. Whatever how often the language is used, we have to say that our intangible culture heritage are undermining due to extinct languages. Yet does the government have duty to protect these languages? In my view, with government’s auxiliary policies, folk institutions or funds should play a crucial role in safeguarding endangered languages. Government has other more important social problems need to solve, and they should not intervene to prevent theses languages from becoming extinct.

It is significant to safeguard endangered languages for preserving cultural diversity worldwide. All kinds of culture are delivered by languages, such as poetry, proverb, songs, novels and fables. If one language is becoming extinct, it means one race, who have used the language, are losing their culture. And perhaps, one precious human civilization will disappear. If some endangered languages can be saved, they can preserve the distinct ideas which only that particular language can convey, such as some abstract concepts. Besides, languages always are signs of distinct cultural people, helping people to keep their own traditions, rituals and beliefs, satisfying people psychological need for individual identity.

But, today, government needs to do a lot of things, which are more important and emergency than endangered languages. Let us take a glance at our real society: high jobless rate, high crime, grain crisis, and climate change. All these are threatening our life, and government has to deploy their resources to fight against those crises. Taking the United Nations Climate Conference in Copenhagen for instance, we can see developing country are suffering hungers, developed country are worrying climate change. Which government do you think could afford for protect the language becoming extinct? Under this circumstance, how government could spend money and workers to solve languages becoming extinct problem? You may say that government could employ more people to do these or give more fiscal support. But, if government did like this, there would be another headache problem that the ruling party plans to promote the tax from its voters or supporters. Economically speaking, it is unpractical that government completely bears the burden.

Until now, how save endangered languages seems a dilemma. Though people will get some benefits from language diversity, different languages will lead to misunderstanding among people, hinder international commerce, and even result in war among nations. Moreover, government cannot spend more extra budget in saving endangered languages. But there are still other ways to preserve the endangered languages. Firstly, each person who speaks lesser-known languages needs to do some efforts to protect their own languages, especially for the languages spoken by few people. Georgian is one successful example for saving languages by the race itself. Though Georgia is governed by several autocratic empires and have used different official languages, Georgian still keep its vitality in 5 million Georgia people. If the people who speak the languages do not want give up the languages, the languages are not extinct. Secondly, society should give them more help by setting up a languages protecting institution or donating a minority languages fund. Certainly, if some countries’ government has more extra budget, they could support those actions, or they could cut the tax in regions spoken lesser-known languages and avoid the tax of those minority languages fund.

Therefore, it is urgent to protect lesser-known languages. The endangered languages need not only oral support, but also practical actions. But, for government, they have to deal with many serious economic, social and political problems. With limited resources, government plays an auxiliary role in protect the lesser-known languages. And the people spoken the languages, folk institutions and funds should bear this burden.

When society is developing, some languages are forgetting in the world. Whatever how often the language is used, (不太理解啥意思,建议换个表达) we have to say that our intangible culture heritage are undermining due to extinct languages (改为by these language extinction 是否更好). In my view, with government’s auxiliary policies, folk institutions or funds should play a crucial role in safeguarding endangered languages.
