208 "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
One way to discover a person's attitude and interests is observing his appearance and behaviour. Since people of various styles often tend to choose clothes which suit for his taste and do what he favors. A lovely girl who raise pets, for instance, may prefer to wear clothes with cartoons printed, and like animals. Another example is Kant, who lives a regular life. His neighbour, set clock by him as he passed their doors. According to his habits of doing things in fixed time, We can infer that his attitude is strict and precise. Therefore it is an available method to specular type of people.
However, this means may be ineffective in some cases. Because people have strong sense of protecting themselves, they do not want to others know them well at a glance. So, they would hide their interests by pretending. for examples, a star may be dressed in lovely style, looking adorable, and assist stray animals, but dress and assistance may be approaches to make a good impression to the publics, and to obtain more fans who moved by her behaviours filled with love .
Likewise, how people's dressing and doing reflects the society's ideas in some degree. Such as PunkStyle, which appeared in 1970s. For young people resisted to authority or control, claim to abolish the dividing of classes. To opposite the tradition, they were dressed in strange style, which includes DIY----- doing it yourself, converting cheap dress to new one with coarse style: frazzled edge, dirty word printed, and so on. It reveals that people want to fee from the chain of class, and to pursue equality. What's more, in past, people had to kneel to their emperors, showing that their society emphasized concepts of superiority and inferiority; however, now, when an American meeting Obama, just need to nod and say hello. which shows ideas of equity. In conclusion, though the ideas and values are abstract, we can get them according to the appearance and behaviour of people.
Nonetheless, differing from behaviour, appearances mirror limit about social ideas and values. Because it influenced by many other factors. The fashion varys fast and of far difference. Last year, retro theme was the fashion, in this year, it is PunkStyle。From this quick changes, we can tell that the idea of fast paces in modern time. Further, what's else we can get. By observing the retro style, it seems that going back to the old times is the socia's idea, and seeking equality is the reason why now people like to dress in punk style. But, obviously, it is a wrong inference just by our common sense. So why the fashion do not reflect the social's idea? Because it may be conducted by some famous designers, who may create the new style by inspiration and sense of aesthetic. They do not care about social idea or value, just do design by specialized knowledge and experience. Besides,it may] effected by people's psychology. Which made up of two contrary intention, one is to be unique, the other is to be the same.
For one thing, people are intent to express themselves by sorts of way. One wear diverse clothes in order to make oneself unique, and attract others' attention. This demand is the power to change style of dress. For example, in 1950s, "Beaten Generation" was popular; in 60s, the fashion was hipple-style ; PuncStyle occurred in 70s ; in 80s, the style of Yuppie replaced. These new styles are designed to meet the psychology of to be unique, which is the reason why some people would attempt new style as soon as it came up.
For the other thing, people think it is quite safe to dress similar with others. Thus, the styles can be popular. When a famous designer devise a new style, some people would try this style as mentioned above. The other general people may be leaded by them and consider the clothes designed by the famous should be good looking. Then more and more people accept this style. By the social pressure and avoiding to be teat unusually , other people who do not like it may wear too.
As a result, appearance may just demonstrate the designer's thoughts, and formed by people's psychological demand, rather the society' idea or values. |
