Issue48 “The study of history places toomuch emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in historywere made possible not by the famous few, but groups of people whose identitieshave long been forgotten.”
Does the study of history place too muchemphasis on individuals rather than groups of people who truly make the mostsignificant events and trends in history ,as this statement suggests? There isno denying the fact that groups of people play an important role in history, but I fundamently disagree with the speaker's broad assertion whichunderestimate the influence of individuals and over-exaggerate the function ofgroups.
Admittedly, at times some groups of peopleplay a vital role instead of the individuals in the historical developments, theyare the motive force in the making of world history. It is the efforts of alarge numver of the common people that make it possible for those elite few toachieve the significant change in the progress of human society. For example, most of revolutionary which aimed at overthrow the old government orobsolescent institution, though modern people always only remember the fewleaders of it , are made by a large amount of common people who may have nodefinite inclination on crude behaviors. Therefore , the people attending makethe leaders to fulfill the final goal.
Despite the merits of the improtantrole that groups of people play in history , however, I disagree with thespeaker’s statement “the most” significant events and trends in history weremade by groups of people, which is discussed as bleow:
There are superiorindividuals in science and arts that have a great impact on their areas.Forexample , the founder of the theory of Group ,Galois, whose collected worksamount to only 60 pages, but within them are many important ideas that have hadfar-reaching consequences for nearly all branches of mathematics. Some quipthat each of his paper deserves a 150-years study .
Without this genius’s being our guide , Ican’t imagine what out world will be like! So as to the dutchpost-Impressionist painter,Van Gogh, whose work had a deep influence on 20thcentury art for its vivid colors and emtional impact. Our history and socityare promoted with the help of these superior individuals, there is no reason ofus to ignore or underestimate the influence of them.
Fewwould dispute that the exorbitant amount of money and resource devoted totaking accurate and complete record of the groups of people could have gone along way toward addressing some pressing social problems of the day. So we needto take further evaluating about whether study the groups of people is thatmuch worthwhile.
Finally ,and perhaps the most importantly, the genuine purpose of studyon history is rooted not in reconstructing the past completely by the meresifting of evidence for facts but rather delivering the eternal values andhumanity which can illustrate the present as a light and bend the arc of futuretoward the hope of a better day.
Tosum up , I think we need to strike a balance between the study on
individuals and
groups of people aiming at understand outhistory and make advice to our future life, only in this we can we know thetruth of studying history.
Admittedly, at times some groups of people play a vital role instead of the individuals in the historical developments, they are(serve/act as) the motive force in the making of world history.( making the world’s history) It is the efforts of alarge numver of the common people that make it possible for those elite few to achieve the significant change in the progress of human society.(The significant changes gained by few elites, which have promoted the progress of human society, mostly resulted from the joint efforts of common people.) There are superior individuals in science and arts that have a great impact on their areas. For example, the founder of the theory of Group ,Galois, whose collected works amount to only 60 pages, but within them there are many important ideas that have had far-reaching consequences(influences) for(on) nearly all branches of mathematics. Some quip that each of his paper deserves a 150-years study. Without this genius’s being our guide , I can’t(can hardly) imagine what out world will be like! So as to the dutch(Dutch) post-Impressionist painter, Van Gogh, whose work had a deep influence on 20thcentury art for its vivid colors and emotional(emotional) impact. Our history and socity(society) are promoted with the help of these superior individuals, there is no reason of(for) us to ignore or underestimate the influence of them.
Few would dispute that the exorbitant amount of money and resource devoted to taking accurate and complete record of the groups of people could have gone along way toward addressing some pressing social problems of the day. So we need to take further evaluating about whether study the groups of people is that much worthwhile(worthy enough).
Finally ,and perhaps the most importantly(important), the genuine purpose of study on history is rooted not only in reconstructing the past completely by the meresifting of evidence for facts but rather(also) delivering the eternal values and humanity which can illustrate the present as a light and bend the arc of future toward the hope of a better day.
To sum up , I think we need to strike(怎么用这个词?看不懂了….) a balance between the study on individuals and groups of people aiming at understand out history and make advice to our future life, only in this way can we know the truth of studying history.
