Art is a proceedure of creativity which involves not only emotions and spirit but also rational analysis and material supports. To some degree, the former is fulfilled by the artists and the later is accomplished by the critics. In short, the artists and critics cooperate to carry out a masterpiece.
For most artist, their source of life comes from the income of auction. That is, there is an art market, which composes of artists, collectors and critics, to support the work of artists. Artists and collectors are necessary in the market for they are sellers and buyers. But, critics are also essential because they act as the connecting point of artists and collects. As a common sense, those collecters have lots of many but lack of discrimination of art. In order to overcome their shortcomings, they listen to the opinions of the critics to enhance their judgement. Without the critics, the collector would lose their interest for art because the lack of appreciation.  Hence the income of the artists would reduce.
Furthermore, critics provide constructive advice on the works of artist for a sensible aspect. For many artists, they catch a impulse of their emotion and working in an state of losing himself. As a example, many artists even cannot explain why he comes up with the idea and how he carries it out after they created a masterpiece. To answer the quesions of these kind, it is the duty of the critics. The critics are fully aware of the history and art and have a sensitive appreciation of art. They would easily connect the works to foreruners and demonstate how it is influenced by other artists. These informations are obviously useful for the artists to get a fully understand of themself and facilitate their further works.
In some cases, critiscs also serve as an revoltionary power pushing the art forward. This applies particularly to those who are both artist and critic. Roger Fry, a critic as well as a artists, made great contribution to the development of art since Manet. He broke up the traditional evaluation of art, which he has acquaitance of, and create a new genre he called Post Impresion. It is said that insofar as the taste of art can be changed by one man, it is changed by Roger Fry. Another expamle concerns Lawrence Alloway. Like Roger Fry, he creates a new trend in Britain and the US called Pop Art, which introduce popular element into art. To explain the phenomon, it is signifacant that those who are critics and artists at same time are likely to acquire an awarness of the standard of great work from both emotional and rational aspect. So it is easier for them to make a breakthrough.
Critics supports artists to make a progress. Without critics, the artists are probably to stuggle for their lives or overwhelmed by their emotional impluse. In these sense, critics are vital to art.
