issue61 High-profile awards such as the Nobel Prize are actually damaging to society because they suggest that only a few people deserve such recognition.

I strongly disagree with the author that, the High-profile awards damage the society due to there is only small groups of people deserve their recognition. I my opinion, such feature, that is only a few people deserve, does not damage the society, but has their special merit.

To begin with, it is impossible to set many high-profile awards. There are two kinds of awards; one is obtained by only a few people, such as the Nobel Prize, The Oscar, and the Olympic Games, while another is shared by many people, such as the presents in the party. The two have different objectives, and appears in different occasions. The first one often has the feature that, only the best one in a specific field has the honor to gain it. Behind the owner, is a record, a far-reaching theory, of a blockbuster. While the other one is to encourage people to work harder, or an alternate way to distribute the benefits. Their objectives are totally different. If we share the high-profile awards to many people, it will not a real high-profile one. Moreover, because we have another way to encourage people, so the high-profile awards will not actually damage the society.

Moreover, it is such feature that conjures those awards special charm. Because only a small group of people have the opportunity to gain such honor, make these awards attract much attention and admirations to those who want to obtain it as these owners. This is the objective of such awards. There are three reasons to explain why the society needs such high-profile awards. The first is the society need models to admire. Unlike other awards, such as the presents in the Christmas party hold by a company, most people have chances to get one. That is a kind of encouragement, totally different to the high-profile awards that aim to build a paragon. In fact, these model are not a people, but the character they sparking. A sound example is the Nobel Peace Prize. The one who obtains it is not the one who makes the most contribution to the feat. Think about Mr. Obama in the 2009. Secondly, many people share a prize, may digress public attention that may weaken the results. Take the 2009 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for example. It takes the telomere research into the public’s eyes. Many papers on this are published and it becomes one of the hottest points in the science community last year. If many people or research fields share the prize, it is impossible for us to pay so many attentions to such a recondite research field, but many other issues. We may choose the one we are interested in, and never have the chance to access to that field. Thirdly, sometimes, the fewer winners make the competition fiercer. Just think about the Olympic Games, there is only one golden medal in a race.

In the sum, it is the exclusive feature of such big awards endows it special charm, it will not damage the society at all.
