TOPIC: ARGUMENT209 - The following recommendation was made by the Human Resources Manager to the board of directors of the Fancy Toy Company.

"In the last three quarters of this year, under the leadership of our president, Pat Salvo, our profits have fallen considerably. Thus, we should ask for her resignation in return for a generous severance package. In Pat's place, we should appoint Rosa Winnings. Rosa is currently president of Starlight Jewelry, a company whose profits have increased dramatically over the past several years. Although we will have to pay Rosa twice the salary that Pat has been receiving, it will be well worth it because we can soon expect our profits to increase considerably."

The Human Resources Manager proposes to appoint Rosa Winnings (PS) as the president in their company, grounding on the fact that profits fallen sharply during last three quarters under Pat Salvo's (PS) leardership while RW's corporation’s profits increased dramatically for several years. Regrettably, careful scrutinize of the reasoning reveals the proposition unconvincing in three points stated below.

Firstly, the arguer falsely relies on the assumption that it is PS's fault leading to the considerable profit loss.
Actually, there are myriad of factors which could result in profits' decrease of the toy company. Specifically, the macroeconomic circumstance may not be as good as last year and the whole toy industry may be prosperous. People perhaps would not spend much money buying toys, which is not necessary for every individual. Another possible cause could be the increasing of raw materials to make toys. If the other factors are not precluded, we cannot believe the sharp decrease of profits is originated form PS's bad performances.

Secondly, the author similarly rests on the unsubstantiated assumption that the dramatic increase of Starlight Jewelry’s profits is the result of RW's right leadership. RW could boost the profits by her judicious judgments and insightful decisions. However, there are still many factors deciding the profits. If the workers in her company do not follow her wise decisions on selling jewelries, the increased profits are open to doubt. So the performances of workers also accounts for the boosting profits. And it could also be stern from the whole prosperity in jewelry industry. Without ruling out such factors, it is ungrounded to draw the conclusion that RW is a good leader to bring increasing profits.

Even if the writer could substantiate these two assumptions, he/she falsely considers Toy Company is analogous to Jewelry Company in all respects, thus changing the president could reverse the situation. But there may be amounts of dissimilarities between these two industries. To be specific, they are facing different groups of major customers, say one's are parents with young kids and the other’s could be couples range from young to old, making sales strategies totally different. And also Fancy Toy Company’s employees would not be the same with Starlight Jewelry’s. Possibly RW’s leadership would not be adjusted to the toy company. Without further detail information of the two companies, it is unconvincing to be a wise proposition to replace PS by RW as the president.

Finally, the arguer does not provide evidence to show that RW deserves of twice the salary as PS’s. Possibly PS’s current salary is quite a large sum for RW. Although given that she could immediately bring growing profits to the company, the writer may intentionally neglect the reason to prove they should give RW such high salary.

In sum, to bolster the proposition, the arguer should provide evidence to support that their companies’ profits changes are contribute to the two presidents’ performances; offer further details to show the two companies are similar in other respects and RW deserves the high salary.
