ISSUE31 - "Money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial."
严重超时 请大家看看吧~谢谢哈 有拍必回~互相学习~
Research, which leads as well as shapes the development of our society, is usually costly while sometimes the result is controversial. The speaker contends that money spent on research is always worthy of being done regardless of the controversial results. As far as I am concerned, I agree with the speaker insofar that money spent on research itself is a good investment out of question; however, it is the how we perceive and make use of the result that counts.
Dating back to the brilliant history of human civilization, research is the tool for we humans to explore the scientific world seeking for the truth which hides behind the surface and finally we utilize what we have researched to improve our conditions and solve the problems we care for. Because of the decreasing amount of natural resources, nuclear energy researched is gaining increasing significance in our contemporary world which are in urgent need of energy. Nevertheless, can you imagine the power of atomic bomb that destroyed the whole city using the nuclear technology? Once mastered by warmongers, that's horrible indeed, nuclear technology is therefore limited by international cooperation. Also the Three Gorges Dam, which is the world's greatest, has damaged the natural environment of the Three Gorges. But it is built still as thorough research shows that the benefit on transportation, generating electricity and preventing the flood has more profound meaning for people. The result of the research is a double-edged sword and research is a good choice only when the welfare the research could bring about offset the damage it would produce.
Furthermore, every investment needs respond which manifests whether the public are satisfied with it. So there exists long-term research and short-term research, especially the former one, which we ignore constantly. Basic research is one of the representatives of long-term research, which provides the foundation for further and usually more applied study. As its inherent property, Basic research is often hard to get fruits and receives little funding, that's why people always ignores or has controversial opinions about it. But long-term research is also worth investment. Once without the basic foundation established by long-term research, the skyscraper of the science will not be stable. On the other hand, there is also no guarantee of the revenue in short-term research.
However, as what Shakespeare said: "There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes", everyone has its unique way of thought to perceive the results of a research. Therefore sometimes certain researches' results are too controversial to compromise and make general consensus. In this case, we should turn to address more pressing social problems that puzzle the world. One apt illustration involves the dispute in the clone of humans, which is the crucial problem in ethics. Who can endure a person looks exactly like yours? Admittedly, In terms of violence, poverty and health problems, money needed extremely. If the controversial point cannot be solved, the money invested on the research might as well be spent on the issue close to people's urgent requirement which benefits us the most.
In conclusion, only if we make positive use of the result, is money spent on research almost always a good investment, whether it is a long-term or short-term one. After all, investment which is most beneficial to the public is to be a good one.
