56"Governments should focus more on solving the immediate problems of today rather than trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future."
What the author presented with us make us thinking how government should do in solving today’s problems and that of the future. Generally speaking, a government should do as Abraham Lincoln once put it: of the people, by the people, and for the people. As long as the problem concerns about people’s welfare, government should try to solve it, no matter it is short term immediate or long term anticipated. However, just as the newly elected president Brack Obama said to its people: You know that a government can not solve all the problems. Sometimes choices must made to reach a balance.
Immediate problems, including inflation, unemployment and bankruptcy, is urgent and deserves immediate action, otherwise, those problems will kill a country just as a severe disease kill a person. As we all know, an indifference attitude toward inflation will eventually cause hyperinflation and thus causing social unrest; increasing in unemployment will slow down the economy and the criminal rate will burgeon; bankruptcy is more urgent, because it will cause Domino Effect, making the financial system to break down. The recent financial crisis presented us with a good example. The year 2008 witnessed the worst financial crisis since 1929, causing severe oscillation in stock market and great economy slow down, with millions of people jobless. Bernanke, the tough president of Federal Reserve, make immediate decisions including instilling liquidity in the market and adjusting the interest rate. Thanks to his quick action, the market began to show a little optimism. In those situations, a government should make quick decision and take quick action, even if it will sacrifice a little in the long run. Those situations also include war, military conflict and terrorism.
However, in dealing with short term problems, a government has inclination to neglect a country’s anticipated future problems, which concerns about the ultimate welfare of the people. A most significant example is today’s pollution. When a government tries to the economy to boost, it will give permission to those firms which will do harm to the environment, even though sometime the government do not mean to do it. However, pollution is a haphazard thing that will greatly reduce the welfare of our future generations. Another case is about the over utilization of the resources of the earth. When a government cares too much about the short term output, it will use excessive resources which we should utilize properly and save enough for our future generations.
Sometimes, when dealing with social problems, a government falls into a dilemma. Wise government will make the right decision that will balance the immediate problems and anticipated future problems. A government should, on one side, take urgent actions when the problem is urgent and, on the other side, consider comprehensively about people’s future welfare.
