40"Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
What is the ultimate motivation that pushes William Harvey to reveal the mystery of the blood circulation of human? The answer is curiosity. And what stimulate Einstein to devote all his time and enthusiasm to the research of the Relativity theory? Of course , the answer also lies in the curiosity. However, further reflection about the curiosity indicates that it equals to the word interest. From my personal perspective,it is the interests about the certain field that make the scholars and scientists devout their heart and soul to the research. Commonsense inform us that interest in the best teacher who lead us through the dark fog to the summit of the light of science. However, whether a result of a scientist`s research can be acceptable widely also hinges on how the scholar combine the intrest with the tendency of the society and world. Furthermore,a scientist`s interest must be harmless to the world ,at the least extent. Think about the devastating influence of atom bomb.
Firstly, there is no denying that the interest play a vital role in the procedure of a scientist`s research which may be replete with tough challenges and frustration. It is entirely possible that a scholar can accomplish a relative successful achievement stimulated by material reward. However, look back at the history of science----Doc William Harvey, Einstein,Newton. Which of the scientific celebrities who achieve such huge success in distinct field ever pursued material comforts? Take Doc Harvey as an example. In Harvey` century, it was widely believed that God is the creator of everything, including human, thus it seemed impossible to hold another view about the physical structure of human, not mentioning dissecting the dead. However, with the interest about the human blood system,Harvey finally found the blood circulation and the function of the heart in pumping the blood ,even though dissecting the dead is so strictly abandoned by the christian church. Take Einstein, the greatest scientist of 20th century,as another example. Even almost all the recent scientist regarded his imagination as a nonsense,Einstein still devoted lots of his time and passion to the "crazy program" and eventually concluded his Relativity Theory. It is so important to have a interest in the certain field that we can never neglect the vital role of it.
Though the crucial role of the interest cannot be neglected, scientist still need to combine the interest with the recent tendency. A scientific achievement must be used to benefit the society and world to show its profound influence. Yuan Longping, the father of the hybrid rice, is a typical example. As undevelopment countries generally face a problem that there are huge amounts of people compared with the low production of the food. To solve this problem and give a hand to the countries which suffer from the serious situation, Yuan develops a totally new generation of hybrid rice which increase the production of the rice by twenty percentage. Thus, more than one thousand million people who are struggling under the line of poverty are able to get sufficient food. Undoubtedly, Yuan is well-known internationally for his excellent achievement. Another example is brother Whrite. In their epoch, flying in the sky with a machine was such a ridiculous imagination that the brothers received nothing but laughters. However, look at what a new epoch the brother Whrite open for us. Nowdays, we even cannot imagine what would happen if there was no Airbus or Boring. Thus, combing the tendency of our world is,at least,as important as the interest held by scientists.
Finally, indeed, new inventions that are beneficial will bring us new experience and even striking evolution to our life. Nonetheless, think about the "evil invention" of human history, such as chemical weapon----it merely kills people. The research of scientists must be controlled to avoid the similar tragedy. Come back to Einstein again.in my personal point of view he must had regretted for what he had done about the Manhattan project. When the "little boy" bombed above japan in 1949, we felt nothing but afraid of the modern weapon. Thus, the goal of the scientist should be beneficial to the society.
In sum, there is no denying the fact that interest encourages scientists to chase there dreams. nonetheless, the interest of the scientist must be combined with the current of the world`s current. Further more, a scholar cannot get widely accepted unless his goal is beneficial to our world. |
