In this era of dramatic social and culturechange causing ephemeral live to so many things, people tend to wonder aboutwhat can lead an eternal life. Maybe the arts will come first. Because thearts, which created by the artist, are considered as great treasures of humancivilization, as shining crystals of human wisdom and as permanent longing forgoodliness. However, whether the criticisms, which wrote by the critics to evaluateworks of art, also have something of lasting value for our society, is open toquestion.
First of all, undoubtedly, when a critic evaluates a work ofart, he or she will judge it base on his or her own philosophy. It is very hardfor a critic be completely objective when facing the issues he or she is goingto estimate, thus it may lead to a biased point of view, or even amisunderstanding of his or her criticisms, which can hardly contain anyvaluable things for our society.
Simply put, the critic will be limitedwithin his or her won values which may possibly resulted in an unfair criticism. What is more, the critic may also be confined in the era he or she lives in.Because people's minds change significantly or even radically due to the rapiddevelopment of our society, some of the criticisms apparent to be of a myriadvalue in the past decades may turn out to be even meaningless nowadays. Theseover-conservative critics could possibly suppress the creative thoughts of theartists, let alone contribute the permanent merits to our society.
However, it is still so hasty to claim thatthe critics have not given our society anything of lasting value. On one hand, although some works of art is of great value, they are too abstruse to bewell-understood by the masses. Luckily there are critics, who can explain them clearlyand help us fully comprehend the meaning of these works. Additionally, in somecircumstances, a critic can even bring us much more profound insights into aspecific work, thus inspire the masses to rethink about art, leading to thedeep thoughts of the artists be recognized by most common person. This is goodfor the value of such works to be remembered form one generation to another.
One the other hand, the critics can notonly inspire the masses to rethink about the works of art, but also inspire theartists themselves. For instance, the constructive criticism is just like amirror putting in front of the artists, providing some useful and well-reasonedsuggestions to the artists. If taking such valid suggestions to heart, theartists can surely make some progress.
To sum up, although the critics may beconfined in their own value as well as in the times when they lived causing thebiased and cover-conservative criticisms, we still can not deny that they havealso brought a lot of benefits to both the masses and the artists. So maybe weshould confess that the both the artist and critic are indispensable, and bringour society something of great value. |
