"So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."

When referring to the issue that understanding of the past has little guidance for present life since today is much more new and complex than before, it seems the author do not consider it thoroughly. Our new and complex life springs from past efforts. Our ancestors` culture and knowledge give guidance to nowadays society, which is a new and complex world.

One example is Confucianism, which influence Chinese thinking by thousand years. It seems nowadays life style has changed greatly compared with the era that Confucius lived. The life style we are leading, the way we talk and write are all changed, but core ideas never changed. Confucius was taking honest as the first responsibility when making friends, and modern Chinese still do the same as the Confucius advocated. He cultivate people must to be committed to their teachers, bosses, emperors. Even in modern Chinese society, loyalty to their leaders is still seen as an important spirit. Confucius also told people should obey helping spirit, and this has always been considering as an important moral quality in China. After listing these examples here, we may come out a conclusion that these examples show that Confucius just influences modern people not guidance modern people lives. Because moral and behavior guide our modern people lives and Confucianism influences these moral and behave. Thus the Confucianism provides guidance for our present lives. Almost all the Chinese children are told to read and recite some books which written by Confucius, and then they build a basic moral and behavior ideas and guiding their future life. Besides, all new and complex ideas are actually derived from this basic and moral. For instance, Chinese modern constitution is a complex law that includes all kinds of Chinese laws. In its introduction, there is a sentence says that all laws are established under basic morals, and these morals sprang from Confucianism, so the Chinese constitution seems very complex but still guided by past ideas.

Another example is learning chemistry. Students in low level when learning chemistry is mainly learn about basic elements and their properties, such as Oxygen can help woods burn, Hydrogen has minimum nucleus. These elements were discovered in the past, but today we still need to learn them in modern chemistry. Why? Because without them we cannot know how brought about our modern chemistry substances. And our modern complex and new chemistry substances are guided by these basic elements properties which founded in the past. For instance, we knew the structure and proprieties of Carbon atom, Oxygen atom and Hydrogen atom. We can use this structure and properties to compose ethane. Since scientists in the past had researched these atom`s structures and properties, we can combine such an complex element, ethane, in present research. These past experience provide guidance to our present researches.

After analyzing these two examples, we can see the past can give guidance to our present society on both culture and knowledge fields. If we do not understand the past, modern culture and knowledge can hardly be built because we would have no idea about how our moral comes from and how our laws were built. Additionally, we will not figure out what properties do these element have and how to combine complex chemistry substance. So the issue asserts that understanding the past has little guidance for present lives since today is much new and complex is wrong.
