Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem.

Admittedly, a free academic atmosphere for scholars and researchers will definitely promote and accelerate the development of science, which indicates the significant function of placing enough emphasis on individual interests. That’s not to mean, however, scholars and researchers can only focus on personal interests completely irrespective of his social responsibility and career requirements—bringing about benefits for mankind and prevent potential harms derived from their work to the greatest extent. Hence, I agree with the statement insofar as appropriate emphasis on individual interests, while I can hardly share the idea that ignores the social demands.（又是如题死慢,无语.....)

To begin with, I concede that individual interests play a crucial and essential role in science advances. Without those seemingly unusual or idiosyncratic interests, many miraculous achievements gained by human today probably cannot be realized. Take a typical example to substantiate my viewpoint. Barry J Marshall, Australian doctor and the Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine 2009, discovered the real cause of human`s stomach ulcers under the ridiculing of some academic authorities. Clearly, unremitting efforts in pursuing one`s interests and ideas can actually be the power to advance science, and bring about great benefits to the society consequently.

Notwithstanding, we have got to soberly realize that scholars and researchers should undertake the responsibility and obligation of helping establish a better society, which means. Firstly, from individuals` point view, the reason why scholars and researchers are highly respected and honored by the public just results from their extraordinary scientific research promise to benefit the whole society and promote the evolution of mankind. Hence, from this point of view, scholars or researchers have actually shoulder the responsibility of making contributions. Secondly, considering the reality, numbers of scholars and researchers are patronized by the government or some social institutions, which certainly expect to produce brilliant achievements and benefits. Therefore, they do have the obligation to repay the patrons. In conclusion, it`s inappropriate and selfish for scholars or researchers to consider their individual interests more important that the social demands.

Furthermore, even if some scholars or researchers do not care about whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society at all. Being as one member of mankind, there still exists unshakable responsibility and obligation for them to ensure their work not to contradict the society or even endanger human’s survival. Indeed, scholars or researchers dedicated to such fields should concern much more about the potential negative influence of their work may exerted on the society.

To summarize, as I have been discussed above, there is no denying that enough emphasis should be imposed on individual interests. However, scholars or researchers actually undertake hopes of both the public and their patrons, and thus they need to consider more about the society even if they themselves really do not care about social benefits at all.
