40"Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

By the time scientists invented telephone connecting family or friends separating in different place of the earth, the conception that inventions or science can help bring about a better society was deeply enthreched in people`s mind. However, based on the voice from a part of individuals, what researchers most concern is to pursue their individual interest, instead of making a contribution the lager society. Unfortunately, the great tragedy of science is that all of scientific achievement is either unpractical in current days or harmful to the society, which makes no advancement to our life.

First of all, the universal goal of all human beings is to make a progress. The word-progress-can be divided into two parts. The first one is individual advancement which is derived from everyone`s unique interests and inherent ambition, the desire to be recognized by other people. Another is development of whole society. However, not all individual advancement constitute the progress of the world, but those which strive to make a contribution to all human beings. It is those scientists, who invented steamer raising efficiency of all industries, who designed computer changing the way of working, who came up the concept of internet connecting all mortals born in this planet, should be inscribed in the history and engraved on our minds. Although those individuals whose sole interest is to advance themselves should not be condemned in the sense that our society encourages people to explore any unknown world, it would be best if they could concern the growth of their communities and convert their research into practical uses.

Additionally, society cannot indulge many scholars and researchers pursue their so-called unusual or idiosyncratic interests which are probably detrimental to people`s life. As is known, exploring some unknown area is tempting to a lot of scholars while is controversial because we have not realized whether those researching is against our basic principles of morality. The clone of human beings, as a best illustration, although attracting many scientists, is prohibited by most countries. On the other hand, a multiple of researches actually disturb the order of our society, damage the health of our environment and even deprive individuals of their living right. In order to test some biological research, an army of innocent animals are injected a variety of chemical fluids and some scientists even changed their natural genes, which results in generating a new monster. And another example is that the impending era of artificial intellect. How can we human beings grasp the dominant control of the world with those AI who have absolute advantage over us? Numerous questions are left being answered.

Not only could scholars contribute to the larger society if they make their researches more practical, but also receive great assistance from others. It can be easily assumed that a research with its wide application and bright prospect would attract hundreds of scholars to join in. Then, some seemingly unconquerable obstacles could probably be surmounted through cooperation with other scientists. It is a win-win situation. Moreover, considering that most proportion of funds comes from national taxes from all ordinary people, the “donatees” should reciprocate some valuable gifts to the whole society.

To sum up, although practical usage in scholars` research may fetter some innovative ideas to come out, the notion that never concerning with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society is not advisable. After all, scientists are also a part of society, they have responsibility to improve the quality of living of human beings and the healthy development of the world.

第一段最后一句好像和全文没有严谨的逻辑关系
