7.The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.
"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."
To begin with, the author unfairly assumes that more factories will cause more pollution. It is quite possible that those new factories are environment-friendly ones that did little harm to the air or water, and that those old ones have improved their facilities and reduced their waste air. In that case, the total amount of pollution is not likely to increase. If there are some new recycling factories which take advantage of those wastes, the situation could be even better. Furthermore, even new factories really made things worse, there is not enough evidence to prove that the pollution is attributable to the town council's decisions. May be all factories are so necessary to the residents in the district like water applying and food producing factories that the council had no other choices.
Second, the author erroneously asserted that the increase of the respiratory patients was because of the worse air condition. Perhaps people have paid more attention to their health than before because the government made an effort to advocate the importance of it. Thus those hidden diseases were checked and the number of patients rises as a result. Even if the respiratory problems of the local residences did become worse, it is totally possible to be attributed to some other causes like smoking. So we cannot find sufficient evidence to draw the conclusion that the air condition is worse, let along the local council is responsible for all these.
Even if the Clearview town council has partially caused the environment problem, we cannot safely say that Frank Braun is to blame. May be he didn't vote for those decisions or may be he even didn't participate in the whole thing. Moreover, we can hardly find any evidence to show that Frank lacks the ability and willingness to change the situation of the environment.
Finally, even assuming that Frank is to some extent responsible for the pollution, we are not convinced to vote for Ann just because she is a member of the Good Earth coalition. There isn't enough evidence to show that she has the ability to make things better in her term. The author also didn't rule out other candidates in the letter. |
