Although to study history could present the similarities of society from different period and its function is not only to the extent. However, particular period always has own characteristics. So history-studying also provides us the differences between us and our predecessors. Moreover, its function influences our society not only in this narrow scale-to break down the illusion that the speaker presented above but also in every aspect of social development.
As a result, I disagree with the speaker's conclusion that lack of well-rounded analysis to the benefit of history-studying

Admittedly, history always repeats itself in an amazing way. The starvation of affection, the pursuit of peaceful life and the exploration to the unknown areas become the inherent characters for every generation in history regardless of the different religious faiths and geographic restrictions. We all know that the theme song of the 2008 Olympic game named "I and you" conveyed the strong desired to the whole world that all people need a peaceful world and live as a harmonious family, whereas it is just the original purpose of this games' founder who lived over one hundred years ago. These pursuits like peaceful life will be never abandoned by human. Therefore, in my observation, the different period also contained the similar characters to some extent.

However, the speaker's fails to realize the differences between two periods. To study history, it is easy to find that our life style, mode of thinking and living condition was varied by the time. For example, as the widespread use of the internet, people from different countries can communicate more easily than before. With the internet, data can transfer with several seconds from one place to another, but it is considered a impossible things before the internet engendered. What's more, the current problems in contemporary society have their own personalities. The exhausted resource, expansive population, and frequent epidemic will never appear in other period before but owned to the current society for his high speed on industrial development and incorrect policies of government. Accordingly, one period has its own characters that different from any others.

Nevertheless, the benefit of the study of history has other functions but not the break down the illusion as the speaker's conclusion alone. Undoubtedly, history recorded every behavior of human-being. To study history, no matter the success or failure, also could draw a lesson to current people which want to live in a better life than before. The financial crisis is a good example to appreciate the power from past experience through studying history. In this crisis, the researchers summarized the experience from other financial crisis in history and provided a series suggestions to the government which are considered a crucial assistance. So when studying the history, we should summarized it and find its overall functions rather than to focus on one aspects alone.

In sum, the benefit of the study of history is presented to us not only the difference between a particular period and others but also the similarities. What's more, it will influences most social affairs rather than to distinguish the people from different period alone.
