----------------------------------
The term socialization is often referred to the process of inheriting social norms, customs and value system. To socialize has been a must for anyone who wants to mingle into a society no matter what kind of job he is doing. Usually, a society's future development depends largely on how young generation are performing in socialization. However, socialization itself has merits and flaws and it is our job to bring up a generation not only well socialized but also not over-socialized.
In the first place, socialization of its members keeps a society running smoothly. In the process of socialization, one learns how to interact with each other, how to fit in a social role, how to comply with social norms and etc. All these skills play a critical role in preparing a person for his social life. Only after obtaining them can one be recognized in a society or at least in a group of people. Once members of a society are socialized, they will act by the same rule, thus guaranteeing that the society can be kept in good order where no one breaks the customs and rules. So how people perform in socialization is of great significance to indicate how the society they belong to will develop.
Nonetheless, over-socialization leads inevitably to the elimination of individuality. If socialized, a person will take for granted eveything from the society of former generations whether it is obsolete or not. In this case, the society cannot expect any creative discoveries or inventions that is to trigger a overwhelming reform all over the society. Absolutely no one is allowed to be special in this kind of society, which is by no means humane. In fact, most of the remarkable breakthroughs that upgrade the human civilization is achieved by ones standing out from Corpnius to Satre. In a desirable society, these genius will be encouraged to realize their dreams, thus improving welfare of the whole society. But when over-socialization happens, their personal inspiration will be smothered. Therefore, it should be noticed that socialization has its flaws if brought to a certain scale.
Since socialization is long intergrated into our education, it is suggested that we address the issue seriously concerning both the merits and flaws of socializations. To be exact, we should educate our children not only all the socializing techniques such as interpersonal skills, but also how to follow their own path to development. To successfully fulfill this job, there is a lot we need to do. For instance, encouraging children to particpate in celebration of traditional festival helps them gain a proper picture of our traditional values, hence internalizing them as their own norms. On top of that, it is also highly recommended that in the whole process of education, we should teach our children to take a critical attitude towards these tradtional customs and social rules. By doing these, we may succeed in bringing up a generation, who would probably contribute to improving our society, featuring both adequate socialization and outstanding individuality.
To sum up, socialization has its benefits and detriments. It is responsibility of our education to be alert for these when raising younger generation. Only by knowing both edges of socialization can we finally better prepare our children for society they are entering and enable them to be equipped with personal characters indispensable for producing a better society. |
