"Facts are stubborn things. They cannot be altered by our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions."
19:00~41
Whether "facts" are stubborn things, as the speaker claims, depends on how we define "facts". Generally, "facts" can be classified into two categories. In the natural level(at...level,不过也可以写in field of nature), facts mean the truth or history, which can not be altered (by)wishes, inclinations, or passions of our human beings; while in(at) the social level, facts mean(可以用refer to) the man-made things, no matter ideology or substance is of course under our control.(觉得这句话太绝对了)
Obviously, truth and history is typically out of the scope where human being can alter. History has proved that anyone who attempted to break the law of nature would suffer from failure in the end. Although it is true that many theories that were first believed to be truth would then be denied by later theories, it is(does) not necessarily mean that truth can be altered. Because most of the "fake" truth were originated from imagination instead of unchangeable facts, and the limitation of our observation also contribute of(contributes to) the difficulty of identify truth from fake theories. Consider the theories with respect of the shape of earth. (take the development of the thoeties about the shape of earth as an example.)People(at first) believed that the earth is a square with four ends until Magellan discovered that the earth is actually a sphere by circumnavigating the globe for the first time. History, or past events, is in the different time and space that it is impossible to change. Of course, the record of history which is written by human beings can be altered according to various purposes like political reasons, (however,)the facts of history never alters. In short, in the realm of natural world, facts which mainly comprise truth and history are definitely stubborn things that can not be altered by our desire.
On the contrary, when facts means all the man-made stuff around us, like buildings or legislations, it is quite possible to alter facts as we wish. Since these "facts" were originated from our inner desires, inclinations or passions. They are actually material reflection of our desire. For example, the first law in human history,The Code of Hammurabi, was established by Roman people who wish to maintain a stable society. And the forms and the terms of law has been changing all the years afterwards, in the wish of our human being to better adapt to the changing social environment. Also, the road as a fact can be altered to lead us to wherever we want; the computer as a fact can be altered to satisfy all our needs; even the ingredients inside food stuff can be altered to improve our health conditions. It is not difficult to conclude that the facts which were first invented by human beings can also be altered to satisfy our human's wishes, inclinations and dictates of our passion.
To sum up, differentiating which category the "facts" lie in is the first and foremost step to answer the question, whether facts are stubborn things. In the natural level, any attempts to alter facts will just be in vain and suffer from failures. However, in the man-made level, we human beings have the ability to change facts into what we wish and incline.
