Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem.
Should scholars and researchers be concerned with their contribution to society or the pursuit of individual interests? It is really hard to get a widely-accepted answer to the complex question, which requires a comprehensive consideration of the relationship between consideration to society and the individual interest, what's more, the very meaning of research. Granted that both of these are of great significance in the research course of the scholars and researchers, a balance should be find in the relationship which actually is dialectical unity.
First and foremost, personal interest plays a unignorable role in research, we can even say that what interest to a scholar is what a light tower to a ship in the sea. On one hand, interest serves as the original motivation in the research that sparks the reseacher's inspiration, brings about courage and energy to confront the challege, ignite the inner passion and let researchers set about their work with great enthusiasm. Without interest, research is just a research and become a responsibility , or say, burden for scholars and researchers, whose confidence and activeness will fade off over time. In this case, errors due to ignorance will more likely be made and results in damages, impeding the development the research. My discrete mathematics teacher, Mr Song, is an apt example. He has been engaged in the research of quantum computer since he studied for a PHD in Nanjing Univercity. Once he gave us a lecture about quantum computer attached with his deep love, at the end of lecture he said with a big smile it is the greatest fortune for him to persue what he love and he would sticked to it no matter how hard it would be, inspiring all of us. Among the twenty years, though research in quantum computer(量子计算机), one of the hardest field in computer science, has a far way to go, Mr Song remains infectiously optimistic on account of his interest, just as the saying goes,"Interest told what you can and help you do what you can't". Furthurmore, those interests that seems unusual or idiosyncratic, especially, are always more valuable in respect that most breakthrough get birth in it, such as the emergence of first digital computer that comes from the daring idea of Von Neumann, the theory of relativity of Einstein and so forth.
However, the importance of the contribution to society should not be underestimated, which is related to the very nature and purpose of research and serves as the material foundation of research activities. First, in terms of its nature and purpose, research can be definite as a process taken by the social brains to explore the unknown and find the answer to solve our inner confusion towards all kinds of existance in the world and to deal with the troublesome issues in the near future with the final goal aimed at the development of human beings. From this perspective, scholars and researchers has the mission when be called a scholar or researcher. Secondly, doing research require money as well as labor and other social resource that all come from society, so research are born with the oppotunity cost, which made it reasonable to pay back to society. With this realization, the contribution should be considered, otherwise, it is totally a waste of cash, labor, resource which could be used to deal with some compelling social problem, such as traffic jam, evironmental pollution, epidemic diffusion.
Considering the importance of interest and social contribution, a criterion must be established in order to weigh which side is heaver, which, however, is harder than we image. The comlexity comes from the relativity of the object. To make it concrete, if we take a research as the object, personal interest is no doubt more important, on the contrary, if we take the larger society as the object, the answer would be the social contribution. Moreover, even if we temporally concede the interest counts more, the value of social contribution should not be ignored for the reason discussed above.
In sum, we should focus our attention on their relation which turns out to be dialectical unify, that means, individual and social contribution is not exclusive at all, in reverse, they can promote each other in certain degree. On one hand, the reseacher's interest drive the research advance and then contribute to the society. On the other, when puzzled by a variety of choices, taking account of the social contribution can help make a advisable decision and fulfill the disiration of the social approval(满足社会认同感) , realize self-identity and ultimately achieve success. As a result, it is clear that what is really essential is not which is more important but how we can adjust their relation to reach a balance to realize win-win. |
