Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem.
Should scholars and researchers devote their energy to what interests them,no matter how unusual or idiosyncratic these interests may be,as the speaker asserts?I share the idea with the speaker that interests is the most paramount impetus of research and account for a great deal of innovations and creations.Nevertheless, there still are conventions, regulations, moral and ethic standared that scholars and researchers must obey.
As a old saying goes:"Interest is the best teacher."Common sense informs us that curiosity is the innate nature of human which exerts its impact on human life though the concrete incarnation of unsatiable appetite for knowledge. To be specific, when it comes to scholars and researchers, those researches driven by their genuine interetsare more likely fruitful and even yield epoch-making inventions. In addition, more often than not some interests might be so unusual and idosyncratic that they donot have tangible connections with contempory society and even appeared to waste the time, energy as well as the talents of researchers. But they did ultemately turn out to be stuuningly significant. And history is laden with vivid examples in point.A remarkable example is the discovery of relative theory by Albert Einstein, which was definitely viewed as stunning and unacceptable in the contempory acdamia, but ultimately influenced significantly the whole structure of classic physics.Another example in point is the evolution theory which absolutely was condemned as heresy by the contempory people who steadfastly believed the existence of god. With respect to this aspect, persuing individual interests,no matter how unusual or idiosyncratic they appear,is more likely yield advances.
Admittedly, some detrator may argue scholars and researchers should keep in mind that their workd should be usefule to the larger society rather than their fantasies. In my observation, whether a research could better a sociey is a complex issue in which there are too many controvercies to come to concensus among the scholars and researchers, let alone to the regulators and legislators.Additionally, would you believe scholars and researchers could fulfill the "assigned" job creatively and enthusiasitically without genuine interets?
Nevertheless, scholars and researchers should not engage in unethical and even treacherous research which turns out to be detrimental even disaster for human being, since their researches are sponsored by society. There is no guarantee that all unusal or idiosyncratic interests are sabulious and serviceable for human being. One dose not have to go very far to see the truth through the cursory review to history.Cloing technique ,as a advance medical technology, could greatly improve the yield of agriculture by means of modifying the genetic structure of crops, was used by some unthical researchers to the area of reproductive cloning related to the conduct of duplicating human being, which declared a war to the basic ethics about human social identity. What's more, the research of biochemical weapons also surpass the common morality and could bring dire massive distruction to humanity. From this point,it is necessary and responsable for researchers to evaluate whether their interets surpass the bottom line of morality and ethics.
Given to the foregoing discussions,as long as scholars and researchers could confine their research to the domain of basic morality and ethics,it will be reasonable and logically acceptable to what they persue, regardless of how unusual or idiosyncratic their interests might be. |
