The speaker alleges that technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics. I agree insofar that technologies have totally changed the way we live our lives, but it is unfair to generalize that our social customs and ethics are determined by the technologies. In my viewpoint, the social customs and ethics are basically not changed regardless of the technological development.

Admittedly, our attitude toward our daily lives has been changed in many aspects because of the improvement of technology. In the past time, when we have something to talk with our friends, we would prefer to call on our friends. However, with the highly developed technique of computer, cell phone, and Internet, we now will probably choose to send a short message to our friends in order to convey our greetings since it is far more convenient and faster. Similarly, we used to write letters so as to keep in touch with our fellows, but now we would rather send e-mails to them or just pick up our cell phones to make a call.

In addition, the activities we do to spend our leisure time has also changed a lot due to the development of advanced technology. The old generations usually chose to kill time by walking along the street or sitting on a sofa reading some books. To the contrary, people who live in this age are more likely to go to the movies or just stay at home and surf the Internet. With Internet, we can do many things like chatting with friends from all over the world, playing on-line games, or just reading the latest news. It is much more interesting, and we do not have to worry about the bad weather outside because all that can be done with your computer connected to the net.

Nevertheless, it is too soon to conclude that our social customs and ethics have been altered. It is the long history and culture rather than the technologies that determine social customs and ethics. It is obvious that the technique in Japan is ahead of many other countries in the world. However, Japanese people would still make a deep bow when they meet each other to show their respect to others because it is their rituals to do so, and it is not changed throughout the development of technology. Though people now prefer to send short messages instead of visiting each other, Chinese people will still get together with their family members on the Spring Festival or the Mid-Autumn Day. It is their tradition for hundreds of years to celebrate their festivals that way and I do not think technologies will make that different.

The statement that technologies determine ethics is even more ridiculous. Is it possible that the moral standard will change because the technique is no longer the same as before? Ethic is something we have in our mind that is used to regulate our actions and keep the society peaceful and harmonious. There is no way violence will become a proper mean to solve dissensions even the technology has made striking progress.

To sum up, what has been changed by the technique is mostly the way we communication with each other and the activities we do when we are free but not the social customs and ethics. So, it is unreasonable to make conclusion that technologies actually determine social customs and ethics.
