这是我的第一篇issue,刚刚开始接触issue,真的是一点头脑都没有,希望善良的筒子们能帮忙指点一下迷津哈!

No.51

Nowadays, the education has gradually becoming the focus of the whole society. More and more people and institutions are interested in how to educate a student in the most efficient way and put forward that the education should specifically designed to each student. However, the specifically designed education sometimes cannot create an outstanding student as most people thought.

First, It is quite often that the students do not have the ideas where their true interests lie. Only by touching large amount of knowledge and different subjects will they really find which area is most suitable to them. That is to say, at the beginning of the student’s study, the most important job is not providing the specially designed class to them but to help them find their special interests. A famous Chinese singer Tao who used to think that his interest is to study the behavior of the human being and the discipline to explain it. So he accept professional psychological training in neuroscience department of UCLA for four years. But after he graduated from UCLA, he took part in a singing competition by chance. Until then he found that singing was his real interest. Tao’s experience shows that people always need some time and some chances to get in touch with different fields to make clear of their true interests. So too early specialized training maybe not useful. The students need to obtain wide knowledge to enrich his or her ability and to find his or her real interest. If not, any education cannot be efficient.

Only knowing one’s interest or need is far more less than knowing a person. Accordingly, the education only considering one’s interest and need will not be successful or efficient. Education does not mean only giving what one need or want, but also means point out a right direction to going forward. During the 1990s, many universities in China set up special classes to accept some teenagers between 13~16 who had done a good job in some special area just like physics, chemistry, biology and so on. They got special designed education in the classes so that their interest in these special areas can be biggest developed. But nowadays, we nearly cannot see these classes in universities. Why? One of the most vital reasons is that although these students is talent, but they fail to obtain some essential ability in daily life vary from washing clothes to communicating with other people in a polite way. Most of these students appear to be much too self-oriented and lacking of common sense. Although they may get some achievement in special area, they cannot arrant their lives well by themselves and go further in the way of scientific study. It is obvious that this specifically designed education does not work.

The most efficient education will not only satisfying one’s need or interest, but also giving the tools to the student to develop the ability to satisfying him or her by himself or herself. The students should use the resources available to educate themselves instead of being educated. The one who most realized a person is himself or herself, so do the one who can give him or her the best education. Learning knowledge is important, but learning to know oneself and doing choices for oneself is more important. There is an old saying in China that giving a person the way how to catch fish is more important than giving fish directly to the person. That is to say the most efficient education is teaching the method but not giving the knowledge. Only getting the ways to educate oneself can a person study independently and effectively.

For the reasons above, I fundamentally disagree with the author’s opinion.
