=======================================
There have existed an impassioned controversy concerning the choice that whether we should doubt everything or accept everything since the era of Socrate. Should students bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study or accept it passively? As far as I am concerned, taking the purpose of education and effects of skepticism into consideration, we should call for a balance between skepticism and acceptance, and only through this channel can we establish a reasonable approach to explore the unknown world.
To estimate whether a factor is deserved in the education, a criterion must be erect: the standard is that the factor should be consistent with the purpose of education at any rate. How to define education and what is education for? In my opinion , education, whether public or private forms, is a social service to foster and develop the students' talents and wisdom, to promote social material progress and spiritual civilization. Apart from imparting knowledge to the students, the most important function of education at any level is to help develop personality of his own.
As a threshold matter, the attitude of skepticism plays an crucial role in the knowledge augment of science and technology. The past several centuries have witnessed the fantastic spur in the development of science. And what cannot be circumvented is that the old theory cannot be consistent with new conditions. Flaws emerges here and there in both natural science and social science. In natural science, Newton's classic law in mechanics cannot adjust to the high-speed condition, so Einstein queried it and put forward the Theory of Relativity. In social science, it is familiar for us that the faulty laws are modified from time to time.
Second, a precise mind including doubt to the various of disorder information around us can contribute to a more healthy growth of students. Diverse of messages, advertisements containing violence, murder, and eroticism produce an bad impact on the teenager students. The consequence will be dreadful if the young accept everything without distinguish. Imagine a young boy without any instructions living in a community filled with violence. The future of his is obscure indeed.
On the contrary, it proves to be of no significance to accept the original theories without any doubt. It is beyond peradventure that we cannot make progress any more. Only through mistakes and suspicion can we find the shortcomings and solve it. Just imagine that if we merely learned the obsolete knowledge hidebound how can we make progress?
However, while we admit that skepticism plays a critical role in the advancement of knowledge, the behavior of doubting everything around us ought to be avoided. First, the philosophy side of skepticism is not correct: querying of anything will lead to confusion in our minds. There exist several things that are not deserved to be doubted---the fact, the morality and ethic. The Japanese doubt the crime committed in the World War 2, which is a tremendous obstacle in the peaceful world and poses a harmful influence to the feelings of Asian people. In addition, it proves to be of dangerous to have a doubtful attitude towards the moral standards and ethics, which might lead to crime and evil.
In sum, from what has been discussed above, we can safely conclude that a balance between skepticism and acceptance should be called for. It is the attitude of doubt that makes the utmost contribution to the augment of science. It is the attitude of doubt that makes a healthy environment for teenagers to grow up. Additionally, it is irrationally to be skeptical to anything. The extent deserves consideration. |
