ISSUE185-Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our
attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.
提纲：
1. 的确，丑闻是有用的。因为正常的监督机制不可能永不失效。从可行性方面来说，丑闻可以起到监督作用；
从必要性来说，丑闻可以弥补由于官员的腐化或失职造成的监督失效。
2. 但是，丑闻也会给社会带来负面影响。 从个人层面上来将，过度注视丑闻或根本就是虚假的丑闻会掩
盖个人对社会的贡献，甚至给周围的人带来沉重的压力以至于消沉。从社会层面上来讲，过度的关注丑闻
可能会让公众乃至政府无法注意真正影响社会生存和发展的问题。
3. 事实上，丑闻给人们带来什么取决于人们的理智程度和态度。对待有意义的丑闻……；对待无意义的
丑闻……。

Can scandals be useful whether in any areas, as this statement suggests? Admittedly,
scandals are useful and focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer
ever could? However, I fundamentally disagree with the statement because it overstates the
importance and necessity of scandals. In my view, this is a complex issue.

To begin with, certainly, there is no denying that scandals are useful. Because normal
supervision mechanism can not ever be useful. We can talk in two respects.

With respect to the feasibility of the scandals, a scandal is a widely publicized affair
involving disgraced, dishonorable or unethical allegations. A Chinese saying goes, people's
eyes are bright. That is to say, some evidences of the scandals will always be aware of.
Consider, the bankruptcy of Enron Company serves as an apt illustration of this point.
Placing in the seventh of the five hundred strongest companies, Enron was once recognized as
proud. But someone suspected that Enron's profitable way had problems. While people believed
that the financial system in America is perfect, Enron Company had continued planning,
carefully, which fabricated financial accounts systematically for many years, in order to
earn a great number of profits through cheated the publics. After this, people pay more
attention on the financial problems of big company.

With respect to the necessity of the scandals, the society is composed of people, and
everyone has their own job. However, the speaker or the reformer who is corrupt and neglect
their duty lead to the supervision mechanism lose efficacy. Then, scandals publish the true
and play a role in supervision. For example, Watergate is a political scandal that
Republican Party of the United States carried out illegal activities so that publics elect
Nixon the president of USA during the presidential election campaign in 1972. Nixon, the
president of USA at that time, was forced to resign because of this scandal. Just because
the leaders of the illegal activities were the supporters of Nixon, the speakers and
reformers of the government neglected their duty and paid their attention to other problems.

Aside from the foregoing statement, however, I disagree with the statement because it seems
to say that scandals are always good for the society. Nevertheless, scandals would bring  
the society negative influence. At the personal level, the scandals let us overemphasize
one's fault instead of treating his contribution fairly, or the scandals may be simply
false. It may also lead that one's family and friends bear so excessive pressure that they
are depressed.  At the social level, to much attention paid on scandals may make the public
overlook that the problems impact really on social survival and prosperity and this
situation is setback of the society.

Finally, perhaps most importantly, it depends on people's intellectual level and attitude
that scandals is to bring about people a clean world or hinder social progress. A scandal
may be based on true or false allegations or a mixture of both. For meaningful scandals, we
should be good at draw lessons and experience instead of taunting and looking down upon
someone. For meaningless scandals that should be called speculation or slander, we had
better pay less attention on them.

From analysis made above, I concede that it is important and vital that scandals are useful.
Nevertheless, it will be indeed harmful that we focus our attention exorbitantly on scandals
. Thus, in my view with this complex issue, we should avoid believing blindly these scandals
and be careful to relate to some one without any judgments.
