The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.
人们的眼神、穿着和动作都揭示了他们的态度和兴趣。你可以透过观察一个社会中人们的外貌和举止来认识该社会的理念和价值观。

Can a society's ideas and values be exposed from the appearance and behavior of its people? While I concede that in some fields and periods, the way people look, dress and act reveals what they are concerned about and how they consider and deal with problems during their daily life, in innumerous cases such a method for judging people seems to be some kind of extreme.

Admittedly, according to the common experience, in different stages one society always has different styles which usually apparently reflected in the appearance and behavior of the individuals, especially the young adults and teenagers. For example, young people used to prefer to choose clothes in simple modes and monotonous colors; actually, they tended to avoid dissimilarities with others. Conversely, more and more young people show a strong interest in distinct costume including clothes and various kinds of decorations in the recent decades. Undoubtedly, from the wired appearance, which often results from the prevalent fashion and the frequently changing modes, we can tell that the standards of value and beauty have shifted a lot. With the rapid development of the modern society, young adults are more likely to pursue his or her personal worth by differing oneself from others.

Similarly, it is difficult to deny that different states and societies might have their obvious characteristics, which depend on their unique religion and belief, the most concerning developing issues, the economic and productive modes, the governmental politics, and so forth. Once such recognizable features affected people's appearance and acts, we can distinguish it without any difficulty and painstaking effort. For instance, many Germans live a life without numerous entertainments and the phenomenon of wasting times, and the reason of which might be attribute to their precise and serious attitude towards not only work and study, but also each realm of life.
Another supporting example is that in a great deal of the Muslim countries, there are rigorous regulations and taboos according to the Islamic Doctrines and their consistent and conservative traditions.

However, to claim that one can tell the values and ideas of a society by merely observing the clothes, look, or behaviors of its people, as all may known, is unadvisable and even harmful. Considering about Vincent van Gogh, whose outstanding achievement had been acknowledged and appreciated long after he died, the result of which is that he had to tolerate with impoverishment and wretchedness. How can we acquire such a person maintaining so-called decent appearance and behavior?
Another conventional case appears both in the business world and the scientific field, that the prominent individuals always pay less attention to the external figure than the inside character and fact , which are not share a common ground with others.

In sum, in order to judge and evaluate a society and fully understand its value standard, one should take both its individuals' appearances and the behaviors, the substantial character and internal spirits into consideration. Otherwise, any conclusion based on seemingly and superficial observation cannot stand the test of the history and time.
