TOPIC: ISSUE184 - "It is a grave mistake to theorize before one has data."
The speaker believes that theorizing before having data is a huge mistake. However, whether it is a fault, from my perspective, relies on the circumstances that the theory assumers face. The answer varies in regard of the practical.
First of all, at best conditions, one can carry out hundreds of thousands of experiment to help formulate his or her theory. For instance, Edison carried out thousands of experiments before finding the suitable material for electric light bulb. Newton discovered by accidentally finding the drop of an apple. The more accurately data is calculated, the further theories can advance. Perhaps, the assumptions before taking experiments are wrong; conductors can rectify or improve it by collecting accurate data.
Secondly, supposing that science and technology do not follow one's thought, in all likelihood, one could only theorize by building models, or even by imagination and calculation. For that matter, no one can justify them. Indisputably, a large scale of fields remains all too much unknown for mankind, such as astronomy, archaeology and biology. Also, the facilities so far we have been utilizing are limited in such areas. An apt illustration is the development of discovering the relationship of human genes and diseases. Resent researches showed that some scientists find certain genes responsible for some born diseases, with the guidance of a correct assumption. Such cases
Thirdly, sometimes theorizing without data help mankind step further, with later proving the theories right. For that reason, assuming about the unknown can never be said to be wrong. As is known to all, certain ideal conditions could never exist. However, it does not avert scientists to assume theories in that condition. James Clerk Maxwell shaped classical electromagnetic theory in 1864, which is about invisible electric and magnetic waves. And later Hertz verified it by experiments. The theory opened a door to electromagnetism. What matters is that scientists never cease to theorize however hard the theory may seem to realize, and never would it be wrong.
In sum, theorizing after numerous experiments and precise data is the best way to pursue truth. Nevertheless, since the limitation of science and technology, theorizing before data come true is still a helpful way developing ideas and thoughts. Never can one judge these conditions.
心力交瘁,想说的话太多,提纲列不好,例子找wiki,乱成一团,结果还是3段 没前途啊。。。今天实在是晚了 明天要上课 其实还可以写 可以实验的时候不实验,是a grave mistake, |
