Tradition is the legacy of the past, while modernization is the trend of the contemporary world. Are they incompatible? And must we make a choice between them, as the speaker asserts? In my opinion, modernization is of great significance in our society, but we cannot ignore the tradition established long time ago. We should improve our modernization on the basis of tradition.
Dating back to the brilliant development of human civilization, modernization is the process that has gradually exerted positive influence on the whole society and benefit people in majority. To fulfill the desire of creating a better, modernization, including mechanization, automatization and intellectualization, has greatly improved our everyday lives. As for agriculture, mechanization, the use of tractors for instance, has replaced traditional implements to make it a relatively easy work, and release the workforce to more needed places. Also in the realm of manufacturing, automatization has economized the limited material and workers therefore diminished the huge disbursement existed in tradition. Intellectualization, which is the vista of the future, makes the manufacturing actually a production of the robots or computers, thus proving numerous conveniences for people. Furthermore, no one could tell what would be bound to take place in the future. With the deciphering of DNA chromosome and the development of biochemistry, intelligent machines are no pure fictions. As what have shown above, modernization, which is the one that could emancipate us from tedious work, exempt us from dangerous occupations, survive us in tremendous disasters and spark us to achieve the ultimate goal of enjoying our lives, is indispensible to the development of the whole society.
On the other hand, tradition is more likely to have profound influence on the spiritual world of ours, and they could provide us with guidance in dilemmas of the contemporary as well as the future. Via studying shining stars in the galaxy of history of different periods, we are moved and fairly influenced by the traditional spirits that were created by them and have existed for long. To name a few, Columbus, the greatest explorer in history, clung tenaciously to his ambition of finding new land though all the sailors were on the edge of desperation. His tenacity absolutely motivates us when frustrated about the reality. Dr King, an American activist and prominent leader in the African-American civil rights movement, although his intrepidity incurred the extremists' bullets, his unpromising and brave disposition inspires us to fight for the future. Both of the spirits forms the traditional value of the whole society, though the core value of the society has changed with modernization, and we are little by little losing more and more praisable virtues that our tradition emphasized, the tradition of the great pioneers of different eras act as the beacons of our soul, bending the arc of history and break down the obstacles lying in the reality, searching for the bright future.
On a less abstract level, tradition and modernization do have their significant meaning to the contemporary. We should not choose only one of them and refuse the other. Combined functions of them should be emphasized. One apt illustration involves the realm of medical treatment, which is closely related to our everyday lives. In ancient China, the traditional Chinese medical prevailed. Although accurate theory cannot be abstracted out of it, we will never ignore the "magic" function it has generated throughout the process of history. However, modernization of today has greatly vitalized the western medicine. They have quicker effect and are based on more convincing scientific researches; therefore western medicine is widely used in contemporary society. But it does not mean the traditional Chinese medicine is useless. In many cases, combined function of the traditional and western medicine can do much good than any one of them respectively. Because tradition as well as modernization does has its inherent strength and weakness.
In conclusion, both tradition and modernization indeed have much importance respectively; nevertheless, when combined together, they can make greater contributions to the whole world. Such cooperation should be applied to more aspects of our lives. |
