147"Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
In the process of modernization, many tradition ideas are impacted by modern technologies. Obviously, there are some confliction between tradition viewpoints and modern ones, so some people believe that tradition and modernization are not compatible and we must face a dilemma to make a difficult choose. In my opinion, though there are some contradictions between them, they are not incompatible, but they are complementary and we can choose between them.
Admittedly, there are contradictions between them. We can not deny that some modern things, including our ideas, our living environments and our vocations are remarkably vary from those of our ancestries. We upgrade ourselves everyday, accepting new ideas and abandoning some traditional ones. Just like the constructions in urban areas, where the dense of buildings is very high. In order to enable more and more citizens to live their, some governments dismantle some traditional house and set up new and modern ones to meet people's demands. Therefore, we sometimes have to face the confliction between tradition and modernization.
However, confliction does not mean incompatibility. That depends on the methods we use and the attitude we hold. Being clever and sagacious, modern people can enjoy both tradition and modernization at the same time. By careful organization and development, we can conserve the patrimony given by our ancestors during the process of modernization. Take the example of how to build our house in the cities again. Wise leader in the government will ask for the ideas of many experts and mediocre citizens and will design the development of their cities carefully. The can locate their new building in the outskirts of their cities. At the same time, they can bedeck the old buildings and utilize them as either the places of interest or the house of modern people.
In fact, besides constructions, in many other aspects, we can also enjoy both convention and modernization at the same time, and choices are not single. We can read in traditional way like reading books, newspapers or novels, while we can also read in modern way such as reading in the computers or even reading in our cell phones. Since each method own their merit, we can choose between them according to our demand. People are fond of reading real books in the weekend to entertain themselves, and are willing to study diligently by reading electrical books in their mobile phones during their way to their offices in the bus. We can often choose any of them instead of having no choices.
Instead of incompatible, tradition and modernization are always complementary. Modern technologies are helpful to research and conserve conventional items, thereby increasing our ability to understand our culture. By using X-ray diffraction method, scientists nowadays can analyze the components of many ancient antiques, hence telling researchers a growing amount of information about the antiques and imparting us more and more about our culture. Without the advanced modern technology, we are doomed to lose much valuable information about our predecessors. On the other hand, traditional technologies are also powerful in some aspects, especially in those modern science fail to deal with like the cancers in medicine. Ancient Chinese remedies, one kind of medicine methods are known by fewer and fewer people, are nowadays testified to be applicable in curing cancers, which can not be easily be cured by using modern medicine. Thereby, they are not incompatible but are medicinal to each other.
In consequence, though there are some conflictions between convention and modernization, we are not predestined to choose only one of them by carefully and wisely addressing them. In most of time, we can in fact choose any of them if we like, and they are complementary instead of incompatible. |
