Generally speaking, arts play a significant role in human history and society for many evident aspects. Certainly, there is no denying that many other things also contribute to create and preserve ideals of a society. In my view, comparing with those other forms, arts indeed worth more applause.
In the first place, as a spiritual creating work human beings carried out, arts is a crystallization of mankind' thoughts, appreciation, emotion, sentiment, etc. A novel is often a recasting of writer herself/himself. For instance, Arthur Conan Dole , who created <<Hemlock Homers>>, had got a experience bearing with detective case in his career. That is why the figure of Homers is so vivid. The symphony <<Destiny>>,one of the greatest composition made by German musician Beethoven, is a condensation of his own life ,which as we know ,to some extent unlucky. Thus, it is undisputable that arts can expose the internal world of human kinds who compose the society, in that view, we can say that arts reveal the hidden ideas of a society.
Secondly, arts does act as catalyst in the reaction(that is so-called impulses) between human beings and the outside world within which they contact everyday, to simply speak, arts tie people more closely to the realistic life. Considering the famous American literature <<Root>>, which reveals the misery lives of American Black slaves, was once said to have a merit by igniting the fuse of the American Civil War which had radically changed the United States history. In this example, we see that the arts demonstrate its social characteristics in the process of a social revolution.
However, contrast to above point, sometimes arts also provide a cushion for humankinds--to separate from the outside collision, and that is mostly seen on the occasion that the artist need to do so by his own. Nietzsche, one of the most controversial philosopher, dwell his hermetic thoughts in his books, which were hardly appreciated by contemporary thinkers. Maybe arts ,here ,his books offer him a spiritual arena for himself. After so many years, still many experts try
to probe Nietzsche's eccentric thoughts from these
"arts". Whether right or wrong, the book themselves give the author and modern scholars a existing stuff to analyze.
In a word, arts preserve the minds of our human kinds, then pass those torches from one to another; In this passing process, human beings start to learn what is beauty, what is truth, what is the essence of the society. |
