TOPIC: ARGUMENT35 - The following appeared in the summary of a study on headaches suffered by the residents of Mentia.

"Salicylates are members of the same chemical family as aspirin, a medicine used to treat headaches. Although many foods are naturally rich in salicylates, for the past several decades food-processing companies have also been adding salicylates to foods as preservatives. This rise in the commercial use of salicylates has been found to correlate with a steady decline in the average number of headaches reported by participants in our twenty-year study. Recently, food-processing companies have found that salicylates can also be used as flavor additives for foods. With this new use for salicylates, we can expect a continued steady decline in the number of headaches suffered by the average citizen of Mentia."

The argument contains several facets that are questionable. First, the argument assumes that Salicylates have a same effect on headaches as aspirin. To begin with, the argument provides no evidence that whether Salicylates have the same chemical property as Aspirin. Although they are the same chemical family, it dose not mean they have the same chemical character. For example, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are in the same chemical family, however, to common sense, their have totally different chemical character. Thus, it is entirely possible that the Salicylates do not have any effect on headaches.

In addition, the argument hasty owe the decline in the average number of headaches to the foods that adding Salicylates preservatives. It is entirely possible that the participants have never eaten such food. As we know, the snacks like potato chips are mostly not healthy; therefore, the participants may not have eaten such foods through out these 20 years. Or, the participant may have medicines or other types of treating measure to treat headache. Thus, the argument failed to prove whether the decline of headaches due to the eating of the foods adding Salicylates.

Finally, even the Salicylates are effective to treat headaches; the argument's author also overlooks other things. Firstly, the new use for Salicylates may lead a too much contain to cause other health problem or side-effects. Secondly, the argument neglect another possibility that the foods that use Salicylates as flavor additives may not sale to the local people. Further more, there are many ways to cause headaches; the number of headaches would still increase though Salicylates has a effect on headaches.

In conclusion, the argument, while it seems logical at first sight, has several flaws as it stands. To make the conclusion more convincing, it should offer us the evidence that Salicylates can treat headaches as aspirin dose. And the argument would also provide the study participants' condition or treat record to make the study reliable. Further more, it could testify that a great amount of Salicylates in food will no harm to the citizen's health and whether the food contained new use of Salicylates will sale to the local citizen.

In conclusion, the argument, while it seems logical at first sight, has several flaws as it stands.
