TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

In a world with rapidly increasing development in technology and productivity, to meet the requirement of society for workers, we need to fully emphasis our instruction quality at colleges and universities. Accordingly, the speaker advises all faculty to take some jobs relevant to their courses outside academic world. While this recommendation seems to work because through experience of practic producing progress instructors can provide the students with  more vivid and more pragmatic knowledge, in my view, it is a too idealistic ideal by most often. This coud be illustrated by following reasons.



The first, teachers in colleges are too busy to take other jobs. To fullfill the responsibility, they have to on one hand give classes to his students, who sometimes make much trouble to techers, and on the other hand to go on their researches, in which much time and speculation are indispensible. Once a time, one of my mathmatics teachers in my university told to me that since she worked in this campus, she had never got a sleep before midnight. Both the  college work and house work made her exhausted evry day. Obviously, the faculty will refuse to work outside unless the are premitted pay less attention to their previous duty, which are more crucial to a shcool's development than some experience of practic producing progress.





The second, in coscience, the essential responsibility of a school is to supply sudents with some basical theories and konwledges rather than plenty practical experience.No matter what new kinds of tech are hot now, some priciples in any field will not change. It is the mastering of these basic priciples that decide how long one can go. In fact, to achieve this goal, there is no need to ask all faculty to spend time on outside work.





The third, the instuctors involve certain courses, such as physics, phiosophy, history, archaeology and so forth are almost not able to find any relevant job. However, this doesn't mean that these teachers can't bring up excellent students.  We know that in the field of physics, Niels Bohr, one of the most famous phsyical sicentists known for his atomic theory in 20th century, spent all his life on science research and at the same time cultivated a group of outstanding phsicists including Heisenberg. Another example comes from Kant, one of the greatest philosopher in the history. Although Kant didn't take any job except as a teacher in schools, he created the one of the most profound phylosophy theories, and attacted untold excellent students. So, in such fields , good instructors is not only impossible but also unneccessary to go out for work.





Admittly, nowdays, the students with more kowledge of practical producing will adapt to the society sooner and better, but there exist many other ways we can  chose to help them. For example, during vocations, students could be introduced into factories for visit or practicing. We could also invite outside workders intio campus for courses and so on. Moreover, these approaches seems much affordable and realistic.





In sum, requesting all faculty work outside the university is ostensibly good but unrealistic ideal. Because it not only overburdened the instuctors but also is not suitable to all fields and even may be detrimental to the college. In order to improve the quality of instruction, I call on all faculty pay more attention to their teaching methond, and all students fully take adavantage of their classes at same time keep a watchful eye on society.
