ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
I disagree with the speaker’s claim that an effective education should be designed to meet every singly student’s needs and interests. To obey this claim might amount to distort the purpose of education, and render our education and society to a chaos.
To begin with, we should clarify the definition of education. Different people might have different interpretation here, and the most impressed explanation I have ever heard of is from the president of my university--Mr. Zhang. At the ceremony of freshmen night, Mr. Zhang gave a speech to welcome us and prepare us for academic live, he said (and I paraphrase here),"Congratulations to all of you! You are the most excellent students from all districts of the country who have passed the college entrance exams to enter one of the best universities of our nation. But, this is not the final objective of education, on the opposite, it is just the beginning. And from now on, you will steer into an entirely new world leaded by your professors. And during this adventure, I hope all of you can find the meaning of your life, build a sound value system to this society and this world, and learn enough knowledge and techniques required by your future jobs, but most of all, I hope you can acquire the ability of life-time learning." So many years have passed, but I still remember every single words of what Mr. Zhang has said, and gradually formed my own understand about education.
In my opinion, an effective education should equip students with some common social moralities and ethics. Students without any honour of virtue is useless, sometime even dangerous to our society. To substantiate this point, one should look no further than recently school murder case in Yun Nan University. Student Ma Jiajue killed all his four roommates for a trivial quarrel. While, the most chilly part is that he had no idea what was waiting for him after he was captured, and even asked the policemen when he could come home. Had he been informed about the evilness of his action and the result of his vicious impulse, would he ever committed such a shocking crime? Even it is an egregious example, we can learn our lessons about the importance of a sound moral and value system to a student and to a society.
And after one has learnt how to be a righteous individual, education should provide he/her a large scope of knowledge, in which he/her can not only acquire the common knowledge needed by everyday living but also find where his/her talents and interests are. Thus, schools cannot blindly focus on catering on students parochial needs and interests without introduced them into the endless knowledge ocean. So compulsory courses are needed for the greater good of students.
Otherwise, students inherent idleness may drive them to pour into easier, more superficial, and/or practical courses, leaving disciplines like theoretical physics, mathematics, chemistry, or philosophy
in deep freeze.
Furthermore, an effective education should teach students how to study and keep that learning habitat into their whole lifetime. In China, we have an old saying to bolster this opinion, “Giving a person fishes is not as good as giving him/her the skill to fish.” Similarly, teaching students knowledge is definitely not as good as teaching them how to get knowledge by themselves, since information are keeping exploding in this era--“enough knowledge” is never enough now. And, only when a person acquire the means to do study and research, could he/she obtain accomplishment in his/her own area.
In the final analysis, an effective education should give students a sound personality, a wide knowledge scope, and encourage students find their own talents and interests, and means of self-study which can keep them updating their knowledge and make their own contribution to the accumulation of human knowledge.
