ISSUE31 - "Money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial."

In the era of the tremedous upswings in technologic and social process, researches in various realms play a vital role in social advancement. It is widely accepted that it would be beneficial to invest research for a nation, especially research of science and technology. Over-emphasising the research's benefits and ignoring the research's harmful aspects, however, would inevitably bring the human society irreversible disaster.

It is true that the good results of technologic and scientific research helps to promote our welfare and abundance our life. People always say that technologies change our daily life, making it more convenient and abundant. Network revolution makes us realize accomplishing everthing at home. We can communicate whatever and whenever we want through online phone instead of the slow way of letter. We can buy commdity and luxury goods we need online and only stay home, waiting for the objects conveyed. We can acquire the knowledge and take a visit outside world wherever we desire in the network with a myriad of information and landscape. Thanks to the technologic revolution, human beings' life takes easier and more interesting.

In some cases, that controversial research, maybe harmful results and beyond ethics, would inevitably bring us distaster or even a destruction of human society. Atom bombs can illstrate this point substantially. The research on atom bombs is for the human's welfare at the beginning, but as the result, it becomes a powerful tool for the wars. The fact that atom bombs fell in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the last stage of the Second Word War is a profound lesson for human. Japanese people today still suffer the great disaster from the radioactive substance from these atom bombs. The issue on the continue atom bombs research in the no-atom-bombs countries today is discussed violently, for majory are mainly concerned with its more harm to human beings.

When the government decides whether a research is worthy enough to spend money, it should consider deeply on the influnences of its results to human society. American scientists are engaged in the research on the genetical modified crops, the purpose of which is to serve to raise the agricultural productive force. Recent experiencs show that animals fed on these crops happen to cause adverse consequences, such as their new birth die easily. It is apparently unapt for government to continue its investment on this research under the circumstance of not knowing the accurate harm to human’s lives, even though it would cater for human’s food needs. Champions of anti-GMC are going on all over the world to struggle against the GMC plants. What is the most urgent to GMC research now is not to create new breeds of crops but to study whether these crops would be harmful for human to eat and find the solutions to reduce its harm. Accordingly when passing a research plan, government should evaluate its result with a cautious attitude to avoid its malignen results of the unimaginable destruction of human society.

To sum up, the investment on the research that would realize the general welfare of human being would be worhy. It is not the truth that all the research is valuable enough for us to spend money on. On the contrary, some research being controversial within its own realms would inevitably cause some harmful results to human society more or less. This kind of research, however, has no significant meanings for us to invest.
