Title: *PhD in evolutionary genomics* (Geneva, Switzerland)
We are looking for a highly motivated and innovative PhD student toexplore the evolution and patterns of selection acting on ConservedNon-Coding sequences (CNCs) using computational comparative genomics. It is estimated that about 4-7% of the human genome is under functionalselection, yet only 2% encode proteins. This implies that there is arepertoire of functionally important elements at least as large as therepertoire of protein-coding genes, whose functions remain largelyunknown. The project will develop our lead findings and will benefitfrom established collaborations.
The ideal candidate should have a strong background in bioinformaticsincluding programming skills, and experience/background in molecularevolution. A Diploma or MSc degree in Biology or Bioinformatics, practical experience in the Unix environment, and fluency in Englishare required.
The project will be supervised by Prof. E. Zdobnov at the Department ofGenetic Medicine and Development of the University of Geneva MedicalSchool. We are also part of the renowned Swiss Institute ofBioinformatics, and offer a stimulating research environment withexcellent facilities.
