I completely agree with the claim that student should bringa modest skepticism to what they study instead of accepting it passively, forthe reason that it is by casting certain skepticism to what learned that thehuman knowledge advances and that student master the knowledge thoroughly. However we should also avoid undue skeptical which may harm the process ofstudy.
On the one hand, skepticism maybe is the most importantcharacter that a scholar should have. For skepticism is the main reason whyhuman knowledge advances. In retrospect process of how human accumulateknowledge, we can find it is the skepticism that help our scientist to advanceour knowledge step by step. The story of Copernicus comes in mind immediately. If he believes everything that the church told him, I believe there would be nosuch story of Armstrong on the moon. If Einstein did not cast doubt on Newton'stheory, he would by no means develop his famous theory. In a word, skepticismadvances human knowledge in a variety of ways, without skepticism, humanknowledge and even society, would never be promoted.
On the other hand, skepticism is one of the best ways for astudent to master the knowledge thoroughly. By casting doubt on what theteacher taught, a student can act actively in the study other than by acceptingit passively which is believed the most inefficient way of learning. Acompelling example would be that a student who asks questions like “why shouldit be that way" would have much more interest in figuring out thatquestion. Driven by interest of why things should work as taught, one wouldlearn the come and go of the point actively and thoroughly. Thus that pointwould be more vivid in the mind of the student. And only after the studentsobtain the ability of cast doubt on what they are taught, they may advance thehuman knowledge like what Copernicus and Einstein did.
Though casting doubt is vital to the students' study, attention must be paid for that undue skepticism can distain the learning. Ifwe do not believe anything we are taught, it would be hard for us to living inthe world, let alone that advancing human knowledge. Imaging that if you doubtsome basic physical law such as gravity of the earth, what would your life be?We do not have neither the energy nor the time to doubt everything in theworld. We must first acknowledge some laws that have been proven to be trueagain and again. Only on that ground, then should we think carefully about whatwe are taught.
In a nutshell, we do not need to castdoubt on the things that had been universally acknowledged. Otherwise, carryingout certain skepticism will always be a valuable strategy for a student duringlearning as the claim states.
