130. "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."

--以学校教育为例, 人们过分强调了其知识教学功能. 此外潜在心理障碍和陋习更易在同龄青少年间传播从而使孩子们更易沉溺于自己的小圈子里, 进而发展出极端行为. 这也是越来越多的父母选择家庭教学的原因.

It is clear that children hold the future of society. How we educate them in the process that they become part of the society gradually is crucial for the further development of society. Thus, children's socialization is one key point for the destiny of society. However in my opinion we haven't learned how to raise them to help bring a better society yet and we need to improve the crucial parts like education system for children to create a better society.

Socialization is the process of learning cultural knowledge, social behavior pattern and value system under certain circumstance of society. One has to internalize these contents of socialization before acknowledged as a social individual by the society, and the quality of this process influences one's character and the pattern of interpersonal behaviors decisively. Since the development of society is highly determined by the properties of its members and the relationships which bind them together, how one is socialized is no doubt a decisive factor for the destiny of society. As to the children, they are standing on the stage of learning in the most efficient state and shaping their characters. Their experience, what they learn and how they are taught in this period generate influence on their further development widely and deeply. Thus, it is also a crucial stage of internalizing the contents of socialization. And it becomes a natural conclusion that how children are socialized could determine the destiny of society.

So, we can lay groundwork for a better future of society, by socializing our children in proper ways. However, the measures and systems currently applied seem not so effective in achieving our expectation of a better society. Just take the school education, which plays a more important role than family in children's socialization, as example. These days school is an indispensable place for children not only to learn knowledge but also to establish their behavior pattern and value system. But it is believed that the function of knowledge teaching of school is overemphasized while the guidance on students' behavior and value system is underemphasized. Besides, the mode of grouping children together and limiting their socialization in the community of the same age is facing more and more questioning. Bad habits and potential psychological impediment are considered to be able to spread more easily in such a community, and it may be easier for children to get addicted in their own circles of the same pattern. In this way a poisonous environment which may lead to serious psychological problems and extreme behaviors could be easily setup with insufficient care from busy teachers. Look at the tragedies in those campus shooting cases, it would be easy for us to understand why more and more parents turn to homeschooling, and we would agree that the consequence is never a sign of the creator who is about to build a better society. What we are doing now can hardly be regarded as the most suitable manner indeed; we still need to learn how to socialize our children and to improve our educational system.

To sum up, in my view children's socialization is determinant to the destiny of society indeed. But, despite of its significance, we are still far away from reaching an effective system under which our children will grow up and become the designers and executors of a brighter future. Childhood is a very crucial period for one to shape characters and social behavior pattern, and children's socialization in this period really deserves our efforts of improving educational system which is essential but not so perfect yet.
