TOPIC:ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny ofsociety. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who canhelp bring about a better society."
Whowill determine the destiny of the society? Only the children? Actually, thedestiny of a society, to some extent, relies on the children and how they aresocialized. However, this is not to say that the way children are socialized isthe only determinant factor of a better society. A myriad of other factors alsocontribute to a better society.
Admittedly,a society's destiny hinges on the degree of how childrenare socialized. What is “socialize “? I define it as the process to help expanda child's scope of communication, from inside the family to the society on thewhole. This requires cooperation with people whom a child is not familiar with, the ability to solve problems in a certain way, to live on one's own. Byattending class at school, children are able to involve in groups andcompetitions and by participating in community service, children are able toadapt themselves to the values and ideas of the society.
Despitethe merits of socializing, it does not play so crucial a role that suffices to ruleout other prominent factors of building a better society. First of all, socialization is only part of the growth of children. Those who are not veryactive when young are not deprived of the right to be impressing figures inhistory. One illustration of this point is Former British Prime Minister,Churchill, who was stammered and afraid to talk with people during hischildhood. Can you believe it is this stammered and shy boy that later led theBritish to fight against Germanyin the world war two? Can you imagine his short yet powerful sentence; "never, never, never give up" inspired how many timid souls? Even though Churchillwas not that a socialized child, the optimistic character and firm belief madeup for this and further led to the success of guarding Britain. We can see that othercharacters, such as firmness, humor, optimism, are just more crucial, if notmore than sociality.
Onthe other hand, being socialized too early will do harm to the children, ratherthan benefit. To be socialized, to some extent, implies to throw out the uniquepersonality. Because being too special means to be isolated from other ordinarypeople. It is carried out in such a way as to change human nature by force, that it is totally misery. Consider who are happier, children or adults? Theanswer is obvious. The reason lies in that there is a world of differencebetween the real society and that of the children, which is pure and simple. The society is a salad mixed with everything, both evil and good. If thechildren are socialized too early, they see the dark side of the society, casting away their previous longing for society. They may, as a result, bepessimistic and lose their personality in order to fit in the society.
Furthermore, when it comes to the question of how to raise children who can help build a bettersociety, we human beings have our natural way by which society developed. Inretrospect, the human's step of progressing is never stopped. For instance, thetransportation tools shorten the distance between places, making it anenjoyable experience to travel.
The artworks open an entirely new window for us to appreciate the beauty of nature. Itis obvious that we have learnt how to make the society better. Each of us maydo benefit to the society using what we have learnt, under the condition we donot commit crimes.
Those who are into literaturemay become writers that purify our hearts; who are crazy for food may benutritionists that help improve health. As long as we long for our dreamswithin the limit of law, we are on the whole contributing to a colorful society.
Finally, the issue talks a lot about "better society", but what is"better society". In my point of view, society develops in threelevels, material level, spiritual level and continuous development. After thematerial level, which we already reached, better society means more ofspiritual. That is the society should be complex, tolerable and harmonious, inwhich people enjoy the colorful culture, develop their personality and livehappily together. The highest level is only possible when there is complexity. Similarityonly means stable, but never change. Complexity, on the other hand, promotesthe development of society. Because of this, children cannot be oversocialized, since socialization may result in the lost of personality, even thecomplexity of the society.
Fromthe analysis made above, I commit to the optimal approach that we need to takean all-side consideration before the conclusion. Socialization is essential inregard of children themselves and society. However it shouldn't be extended toofar, for it is not the only factor that determines the destiny of society. Moreover, we have long been aware of how to raise children to achieve a bettersociety.
