The materials provided touches upon theissue whether employees working four days a week can be beneficial to thecompany, the society and the individuals. Contrary to what the readingsuggests, the professor in the lecture uses three points to refute that afour-day workweek is a desirable choice.

First, unlike what is mentioned in thereading, the lecturer believes that allowing employees to work four days aweek, instead of five days, will make company spend much more money rather thansave it. This is because that a considerable sum of money will be used to trainnew employees as well as provide them with medical care. More officialfacilities and computers will also be needed to guarantee the efficiency ofnewly-employed workers. All of the above demands will inescapably cut theprofits of the company.

Second, although the reading passage isoptimistic that the four-day-per-week option will help reduce the unemploymentrates, hence improve the social condition as a whole, the lecturer contradictsthis idea by a certain set of proofs. As is already mentioned, recruiting newworkers is costly, so companies are likely to choose other options such asletting the old ones work overtime. The recruitment may also raise companies'expectations on newcomers in the hope that they can be as productive as theones who used to work 5 days per week. In that case, no new jobs would becreated, so this practice is just not sustainable.

Finally, the lecturer demonstrates thatmore free time will not improve individual worker's life as the readingpassages has believed. The less working time inevitably reduces the stabilityof a job as well as the chance of promotion. Worst yet, in times of an economicdownturn, the employees working less hours are bound to be the first to hit thesack. Besides, bosses are generally more willing to give promotion to those whowork 5 days per week.

To sum up, although working four days aweek sounds like a triple-win option to all parties involved, the lecturer hasused adequate information to prove that it will be, at best, a wishfulthinking.

Both the reading and the lecture talksabout whether it will do good to organizations to have a team caring for aproject. Yet contrary to what the reading suggests, the lecturer makes severalpoints to illustrate that teamwork has quite a lot drawbacks as well.

In the example the lecturer has given, acompany assigned a team(更正:several teams to be responsible for a project(更正:certain projects. However, not every member of the team(s) contributed their talentsand formed a pool of expertise to make the work more smooth and effective asthe reading expects; rather, there were many free-riders, and the free-riders just got asmany recognitions as the team did if it managed to deliver good work

Second, team work did not make thosehard-working members who gave a lot of insightful ideas feel better. Besides the emergence of free-riders, the team as awhole got the recognition instead of the members themselves. This clearly proveswhat the reading believes to be wrong.

The example mentioned by the lecturer alsoshows that it was quite hard for the team to reach concensus(更正:consensus about how to move the projectquickly and effectively. With the one or two influential members, whenever theythought an idea as infeasible, it was usually negected(更正:neglected for good rather than beingconsidered further. Likewise, even if an idea was opposed by several members,as long as the leading members thought it as practical, it can finally be putinto action. Yet when the project failed, it was the whole team to be accused. All the above facts indicate the opinions of the author to be doubtful.

Therefore, although organizing a teamsounds an appealing way of work, the illustration made by the lecturer onlyshows that it can also cause many problems.

Both the reading passage and the lectureinvestigate the issue about whether a famous painting known as Portrait of anElderly Woman in a White Bonnet was authentically drawn by Rembrandt. Yetunlike what is suggested in the reading, the lecturer contends that it isindeed a work by the famous seventeenth-century Dutch painter. She uses ampleevidence to support her opinion.

First, as for the fur coat the woman in thePortrait wears. The lecturer demonstrates that an Xray examination of thepigment used shows that the fur coat is actually repainted after 100 years, perhaps to increase the value of the painting. This has been the reason why thewoman looks more like an aristocrat. But the fact that the fur coat is lateradded over the top already suffices to contradict the opioioin(更正:opinion made in the reading passage.

Second, when it comes to the light andshadow in the painting, although the reading still sees certain inconsistencyfrom it, the lecturer convincingly argues that once the newly-added fur coat isremoved, the original version of a simple color really illuminates the face bythe light. Jugding(更正:Judging from the original light and shadow, people have good reason tobelieve this is just the genuine Rembrandt style.

In the final analysis, the lecturersuccfully(更正:successfully clears thedoubt made in the reading material regarding the wood panel. Although thereading suggests that no painting which uses a glued wood panel has beenrecognized as the artistic work by Rembrandt, the lecturer states that the woodpanel has actually been made larger also to make the painting more grand and valuable.Yet the single original panel is still the one frequently used by Rembrandt:the panel actually derives from the same tree whose wood is used in anotherpainting which is regarded as a Rembrandt work.

Therefore, although several points in thepainting Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet has lead the author ofthe reading passage into doubting the authenticity of the work, the lecturerhas proved it by illustrating three pieces of forceful evidence.
