Background:
EEA @ Tsinghua (undergraduate) ---> EE @ Duke (Ph.D.)
Full financial aid, TA.
Major: Electrical Engineering, electromagnetics.
TOEFL: 653, GRE: 2350

(V for VO and T for 小飞机)

V: Ren Tong!
T: Morning, Sir! (walking over to the window)
V: Good morning! How are you?
T: Fine, thanks.
V: (looking at the DS forms) Why are you going to the United States?
T: To get my Ph.D.
V: Your major is?
T: Electrical Engineering.
V: What aspect?
T: Electromagnetics.
V: (turn off the microphone, go away for a while, then back) Sorry about
that. (And then looking at the screen)
T: It’s OK.
(Silence for a little while.)
V: &^%*&(*&* please! (quite dim)
T: Excuse me but…
V: Give me your test scores.
T: (pick the score sheets out and put them in) Here you are.
V: (notice that the microphone was still off, then turn it on) Oh, the
microphone was off. I’m Sorry.
T: (smile)
V: (take a glance at the score sheets and put them out.) OK. What’s your
plan after graduation?
T: I want to teach, in Dalian xxx University. Actually I have already talked
with the university about my future. Here is a supporting letter about my
job offer. (putting the letter in)
V: Oh, no, I don’t accept that. (putting them out)
T: Oh, that’s OK.
(silence again for a while)
V: What will you teach?
T: Electromagnetics theory and simulation.
V: What did you say about *&%^*^%?
T: Electromagntics deals with the relation between electricity and
magnetism. …
V: Could you please say that word again?
T: Electromagnetism, or electromagnetics, as we also call it.
V: (putting in the word into the computer) Why do you think you can find
such a position?
T: Because my father is dean of the Engineering College at Dalian xxx
University. And I want to be a professor there.
V: Give me your %^$&%$&^ please?
T: What?
V: Your curriculum vitae, do you have one?
T: Oh, yes I do. (pick out my CV and put it in) Here you are.
V: (look at my CV briefly, very fast, and circle some words in my research
experience part. Then go away for a while with my CV and a piece of blue
paper.)
V: (come back again) What will you do after graduation?
T: Come back to my hometown Dalian.
V: Do you have any relatives in the United States?
T: No, all of them are living in Dalian.
(silence a third time for a while)
V: Ok. I will issue you the visa. Please go to window 10. Have a nice trip!
(tear off the green card and put it out)
T: Thank you.

2. 心态:If I pass, everything is normal. If not, nothing is wrong.

Dear consular officer,

It is my pleasure to have Miss Ren as my undergraduate student and research
assistant in my group from Nov.2002 till now. She holds a solid background
and shows strong abilities in the experiments as well as in her research
work. I believe that Miss Ren will make valuable contributions to our country
in her future research fields.

Through our communication, I find that her motivation of studying in the US
is very clear: she just wants to improve her academic capability with the
guidance of excellent faculty and advanced research equipment. I think
Electrical Engineering is the right major for Miss Ren and she should fully
take advantage of this precious opportunity to study abroad. After she gets
her Ph.D degree, I strongly hope that she return to China and work with me
again. With those advanced skills and theories that she would have learnt in
US, I'm sure that she will hopefully improve the research quality of our lab
and take her responsibility to make China a colorful country.

I appreciate your assistance regarding her visa interview. If any further in
formation about Miss Ren is needed, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely Yours

Prof. xxx
Dept. of Electrical Engineering
Tsinghua University

following is a message I sent to my prospective advisor.

--------------------

I do not have an example, but the following information should be helpful.
The supporting letter may include the following tips:
0. Title: Consular Officers at U.S. Embassies and Consulates in China
1. Introduction of you and your lab.
2. The reason why you want me to go to the States to study with you
3. What I will do in your team. ( Please make it related with life, not army
research. No need to be too specific.)
4. Tell the visa officer that I will probably come back to China after
graduation to seek a research position in a Chinese University.
5. State that you would be happy if the consular officer can issue me a visa.
6. Anything you feel like to say is welcome.
7. Your signature and date.
