52"Education encourages students to question and criticize, and therefore does
little to promote social harmony.
"
My answer:
The ability of students to question and criticize, which is gradually emphasiz
ed nowadays by education, is not necessarily conflicting with social harmony.
In fact, the former is essential for a society to make great progress and atta
in to the really harmonious state.
Social harmony, in a broad sense, is a state in which the majority of people c
an work most efficiently, with the least possibility of damages brought about
by conflicts between members. It does not exclude disparity of attitudes and t
he following discussions. As a matter of a fact, it is through discussion, the
channel for the members to speak out their ideas, that a consensus could be a
chieved, therefore social harmony could be promoted and people in it could wor
k heart-and-soul on the basis that most of them drew to an agreement by sharin
g their views with others. Just imagine in a society where people are discoura
ged, or even forbidden to question or criticize others or present their own th
oughts, how could it be possible for it to be in true harmony? Chances are th
at it would be a dictatorial society with oppressed citizens who might rebel w
henever timing was mature. Such cases are too many in history to be mentioned
one by one.
So it is wise for education, a main tool for the government to foster intellec
tuals, the future of the society, to encourage students to question and critic
ize. By doing this, the young students will not only get the ability to think
by themselves, instead of believing blindly in what is offered to them and acc
epting the knowledge passively, but also they will grasp the important tool fo
r future success: get consensus by discussing, which in the long run, inevitab
ly prepare the society with knowledgeable students who will contribute to its
stability and development.
Although the ability for students to question and criticize is essential for t
he social harmony, there is no denying that sometimes, if too much emphasis is
put on the educating of questioning others or established assertions, it is l
ikely that some students would become skeptic and tend to doubt everything for
the sake of doubt. They would rather believe in nothing presented to them and
they criticize everything, which undoubtedly would destroy the social harmony
and thus its stability.
To sum up, education should not be blamed, but be lauded, on encouraging stude
nts to question and criticize, because it could promote real social harmony by
offering vent for the individuals to speak out and share their ideas with oth
ers, therefore come to a more rational and logical consensus. But too much is
too little. Educators may also have to take a close look at the extent to whic
h the students should be encouraged to question and on what conditions. |
