51.The following appeared in a medical newsletter.
"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."

The argument above presents a relatively sound case for arguing that if doctors want
all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment., they should consider comparing two groups of patients .One of groups that Dr. Newland
took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment and their recuperation time, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Another group that
Dr. Alton given their sugar pills and average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. However, careful scrutiny of this argument would reveal that it suffers from several fallacies and therefore is unconvincing.

First of all, the arguer unfairly relies on the assumption that taking antibiotics to patients rather than sugar pills was responsible for the recuperation time was reduced. However, it is entirely possible that one or more other factors were instead responsible for it. For example, perhaps the first group of patients was more strongly than the second group. Or perhaps the first group might be younger on average, or less serious in the degree of muscle strain. Or perhaps Dr. Newland has a better skill than Dr. Alton, because the former who specializes in sports medicine and the latter who only a general physician. In short, unless the experiment was conducted in a controlled environment in which all factors were the same for the first group as for the secondly, it is impossible to draw any firm conclusion about the patients who taking antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment will reduce their recuperation time.

In addition, it is unfair to assign blame for the problem that the secondary infections to take sugar pills. No evidence shows the secondary infections must be happen if patients do not take antibiotics. Without considering and eliminating these and other possible factors, the arguer cannot bolster this idea.

Moreover, the arguer fails to consider the specificity of the example. One example is rarely sufficient to establish a general conclusion. Not all patients with muscle strain are suitable to taking antibiotics. For some people, they are allergic to antibiotics .In fact, unless it can be shown that the first group of patients is representative of all patients who suffer severe muscle strain, the conclusion that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment." is completely unwarranted.

In summary, this argument has several patent flaws which render it logically unpersuasive as it stands. To strengthen the argument, further investigation and analysis are needed. To persuade me that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment, the arguer would need to provide clear evidence that the secondary infections will happen on people who
suffered a
severe muscle strain .Furthermore, to better evaluate the arguer’s claim we would need more information about the patients have the same symptoms and equal standard of body physical-and that doctors should both have highly skill and experiences of the ill.
