Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?A job with more vacation time but a low salary is better than a job with a high salary but less vacation time.


Nowadays, more and more people are inclined to prefer jobs with high salary but less vacation time because of the large amount of money they can receive. However, contrary to their opinion is my heartfelt agreement with the idea that a job with lower salary but more vacation time is better. Apart from money, there are many other important things in our life which we would probably miss if our jobs take up too much time.

To begin with, a lower-paying job with shorter hours would leave us more free time which is not only beneficial to our physical health but also good to our mental health. It is the high pressure and long working hours of jobs that make large number of middle aged people get various kinds of physical and mental problems, such as hypertension, cancer, or tristimania. It is reported that every year there are some white-collar professions who commit suicide. On the other hand, one who takes a job with low salary but shorter hours has enough time to relax and recover. They would be energetic and happy when they return to work. Also, the personal life can only be enjoyed adequately if there is enough time away from the professional life. A high salary affords nice things, such as houses, cars or television, but a person who has to work night and day will not be able to drive any pleasure from them. With more vacation time, people can do the things they like, such as listening to the music, playing violin, or going on a trip, which would make their life more colorful.

In addition, people who take a lower-paying job with shorter hours and more vacation could spend more time to keep company with their families. A father or a mother who makes lots of money might be able to provide his or her family with a comfortable is life, but how much good does that do if he or she never sees them? Time spent with family, especially children, is invaluable. Perhaps spending some time to raise a healthy, well-adjusted child and get the child to learn his lessons well is much more important than earning the money.

However, just as the old saying goes “money makes the mare go”, money plays a significant role in our daily life. There are more and more financial responsibilities, including the raise of children, the purchase of cars and house and the medical care for old people. Therefore, one must concede that the low salary is somewhat a drawback compared with the high salary of the jobs with less vacation time.

To sum up, although there may be some minor disadvantages with a low paying job with shorter hours, I feel the advantages far outweigh them. A low paying job with shorter hours and more vacation time could give people more time to enjoy life and to stay with their families. Although he gets less money, he does not miss all other important things in his life. So from what has been discussed above, we can safely arrive at a conclusion that a job with more vacation time but a low salary is better than a job with a high salary but less vacation time.
