TOPIC: ARGUMENT189 - The following is a recommendation from the dean at Foley College, a small liberal arts college, to the president of the college.

"Since college-bound students are increasingly concerned about job prospects after graduation, Foley College should attempt to increase enrollment by promising to find its students jobs after they graduate. Many administrators feel that this strategy is a way for Foley to compete against larger and more prestigious schools and to encourage students to begin preparing for careers as soon as they enter college. Furthermore, a student who must choose a career path within his or her first year of college and who is guaranteed a job after graduation is more likely to successfully complete the coursework that will prepare him or her for the future."

The author rests the claim that to increase the enrollment the school should promise to find its students jobs after they graduate on some assumptions that seems warranted. But actually, some fallacies render the claim unconvincing.

To begin with, the author claims the program is necessary for many students are concerned about job prospects after graduation and it must be a good way to compete against larger and more prestigious schools. However, the claim is based on some assumptions that are unsubstantiated. First, the author assumes that the program will surely increase the career prospects. Yet, no evidences can make sure that it is the case. Only by promising without any details about how to do it is unconvincing to any students who are really concern about their future. Second, the claim is based on an assumption that students choose their schools only by checking if they could get a good job in the future. This is ill-advised. In fact, the environment of a university, the history of it, how many distinguished professors they have and what they could provide to the students on their way to get knowledge are all concerned. Most of them are more attracting then the jobs. What's more, what about the employ rate of other prestigious schools? Perhaps they also their students could get better jobs, which can't be caught up by Foley College.

What's more, to recommend that the choosing their career path at the first year of their life is a ill-advised. As we know, many fresh men even have no idea what they should study and no nothing about what they are really interested in. In this case, to force them to choose a career path is unrealistic. They may finally found that the career they choose doesn't fit them not to mention the job in the future. What's more, even they choose a job at early age; it doesn't mean that they will get a good job. It is decided by the demand of one job and what the ability of a student. Even start job education early, a student without hard working and even interests will not get a ideal job.

Finally, the author claims that a guaranteed job at early time of university will make sure that a student to successfully complete the coursework which will make sure that they are prepared for the future. However, it is hastily generated. On the contrary, as common sense informs us, students who are guaranteed with a job in the future may just feel no anxiety about the future and hence no hard-working. As a result, even the university finally find a job for these students, the job might be bad with low salary and bad working environment as the students are not qualified enough to get a better job.

In sum, the author fails to convince me that the program to guarantee jobs for the graduated students is a good idea. To support his recommendation, the author will have to give more evidence to prove that the students concern most about the jobs in the future and this program will make sure that the employment rate will be higher then the prestigious schools. To better support its recommendation, the author will have to make sure that to choose a guaranteed work at the first year in the college is a good idea, which could encourage the students to work hard and hence have a bright future.
